Subject: A Technical Question???? IP: Logged
Message: Okay all you geniuses out there, here's one for you. I have a 2001 Quad Cab. There is a metal bar right behind the back bumper that is terminated on each end by rubber boots. The bar "floats" on what seems to be loose springs. It doesn't look like is serves any purpose. Can anyone tell me what it is and what it does. I'm usually pretty good at figuring these things out, but this one has got me stumped. Thanks.

Message: It's a dampener. All the Quad Cabs have one. When I get back to the house, I'll post a little better explanation of what it is/does, as outlined in the FSM.

Message: As promised...
"... Additionally, the Dakota Quad Cab uses a mass dampener located between the frame rails, immediately forward of the rear bumper. This damper is used to address NVH issues. ..."
From previous discussions on this subject, I believe that the NVH stands for Noise, Vibration, and Harmonics.

Message: Thanks Halo3
I appreciate the information.
By the way......Your truck looks nice. I have a 2001DQC. No mods except for a sound system. Had a custom sub box installed in place of the center console. Sounds great. You can see it at:

Message: That sub-box is pretty slick, TonyC!! I've been thinking of getting my entire center console ripped out & replaced with a custom built one. My hope is to get one fabricated that will give me some top space for mounting a CB, scanner, and CD storage, and still provide bottom space for a sub. Guess time will tell on that though.

Message: Nope, NVH stands for noise vibrations and harshness. Thats what the chrysler sales schools keep telling me.

Message: Yeah its supposed to be a vibration dampner. For my 2002 quad cab it was a 50 lb weight reduction when I installed the proglass roll pan and cuda style duals.
Bumper, brackets, vibration dampner etc removal cut over 100 lbs off the vehicle. And yeah now the exhaust rumbles a little...but nice rumble & vibration
