I know a blown plenum gasket causes oil to be burned. Does it also cause detonation at higher RPM's? Can it lead to overheating?

Mine just got fixed last week.

It causes severe pinging alright as well as oil burning. My plenum gasket was blown out in four places; I never noticed my engine getting any hotter than normal. Putting in a 180 degree thermostat is a good idea though when getting it fixed; since everything is already taken apart. That and replacing the coolant bypass hose.

A blown plenum gasket will cause pinging, however I doubt it would contribute to a over heating condition.

Is there any clearcut way of telling if your plenum gasket is blown - when I look down my throttle body, it is dirty but there isnt alot of oily residue.

There is another way of testing for the blown plenum gasket that involves the vacuum system or something. Hopefully someone can chime in with details.

I checked mine by looking down the throttle body at 72k miles when I got the truck and it did look clean. But it had been pinging a lot back then too. I checked it again at 91k miles and I could actually see a puddle of nice black oil down there. There was no doubt about it then that it was blown.

And getting the manifold off; the gasket was blown out in four places. And now that it is fixed, it never pings. It was definately blown back at 72k miles when I bought the truck when it was pinging so much.

Pull the hose to the PCV valve and plug the valve and the hose. Pull the hose from the valve cover to the air hat on the throttle body and check for vacuum at the hose. If any vacuum then probably a blown plenum gasket. Does anyone know if you could still have a blown plenum gasket if this test shows no vacuum.
