Subject: I shouldn't ask this... IP: Logged
Message: If you are looking for speed, would you take an r/t or a 318 with a manual. My buddies swear that a 318 is just as fast as an r/t. I beg to differ. Also, as far as reliability goes,(besides trannies), which motor is more "bulletproof"?

Message: I think they perform about the same. I have an R/T and its just slightly faster than my friends 5.2 5-speed. It just depends on what you would rather drive. Do you often get stuck in traffic and find yourself inching forward all the time because with a 5 speed that sucks. Would you use it for drag racing, because if so that would be another reason to choose the auto as they are more consistant and the choice of most racers with cars used on the street and strip? Now occasionally on the street I would kill for a manual, but then I remember what a pain it can be too.
Now if you do think you would rather have a 5 speed then maybe you should think about getting a dakota with a 4.7 in it. They make more power than the 5.2 (almost as much as the 5.9) but get better fuel economy. The only downside is there aren't quite as many choices for aftermarket parts for them as there are for the magnums(but should be enough to get you by though). But that should all change since the 4.7 is now the choice engine for mopar and there should be way more parts available for them in the future.
I know this was long but I hope it helps you figure out what you want.

Message: But the 4.7 allows you to change your cams with out pulling the entire motor out. :-)
I have a 99 5.2 with a manual. I raced a guy with a 2000 rt when I first bought it used. I kicked his butt off the line, he then passed me when I was in 3rd gear.

Message: Yeah good point about the cams.
Oh yeah and if i were to buy another dakota and was going for speed, i would probably buy a 4.7 5-speed and maybe try to get one that runs full time all wheel drive.

I have to differ with you about some of your points: You stated:
'Do you often get stuck in traffic and find yourself inching forward all the time because with a 5 speed that sucks. Would you use it for drag racing, because if so that would be another reason to choose the auto as they are more consistant and the choice of most racers with cars used on the street and strip?'
Would a load of.....
If you take your foot off your brake in traffic, does your 'auto' move forward? That's what I thought.
Unless it's downhill, mine doesn't. Typical auto denial and auto rationalizing why THEY don't have a standard!
And lets talk dyno #'s, quotes from factory are crank quotes, with an auto, you loose substantially more off that.
My 4.7, puts out 300ft/lbs, at the REAR WHEEL-got the graphs.

Personally, I'd take the 5.2 5-speed. Cams are harder to change, but you can do 1.7 roller rockers instead for the same effect. Parts are cheaper for 5.2/5.9, and it's been proven to last 300,000 miles with good regular maintence.
4.7 IS NOT more powerful than the 5.2, and not anywhere near as powerful as the 5.9. It just has the advantage of a better transmission (auto)

Mines better!! Mines beter!! Arghh!
The 5.2/5.9 was in existance nearly as long as the automobile itself...the 4.7 is only turning 6 this year.
PLENTY of parts are out there for the 4.7, you can make some good numbers with it.
The 4.7 is lighter, more efficient, higher revving and a newer, more advanced design. Argue all you want, but its the truth.
A 5.2/5.9 can be built from aftermarket parts, but most people aren't looking for that.
PERSONALLY, I'd look for a 4.7 stick. Spend a little on some 206 or 212 cams, superchips tuner, intake and such and it will throw you in the seat!

Message: Graph, I'm surprised at how user friendly these gears are. When I drive "normal" you would only notice I wind through gears quicker. Now if my right foot gets heavy and my left foot gets tired, then it is a little nuts. 1st gear is steep but still very functional, and I can start in 2nd easily. No problem smoking tires in 1st or 2nd, and actually broke them loose after shifting into 3rd once. Showing off for my bro, did a 1st 4lo launch, not severe enough to break all 4 loose (still waiting to try that one) buy, it was neck collar time! LOL. Oh yeah, mine are a shade over 32"
