Subject: cold air intake & k&n IP: Logged
Message: I recently traded in my 95 CC 3.9L auto 4x4 for a 2002 QC 4x4 auto 4.7L. I am looking at upgrading the air intake. I just looked on K&N's website, they have 2 kits that fit my truck. One provides 7hp and one provides 8hp increase. However, in looking at the dyno charts, these increases are over 3000 rpm.
Why would I spend the money to get a kit that provides gains over 3k rpm? Driving 80 down the highway I don't hit over 3k rpm. If i were racing I could see the advantage.
Any of you have another brand kit that provides gains in a lower rpm range?
Obviously the K&N would filter out more particles than the stock filters. I had one on my old 95.

Message: As far as HP increases, I think you hit the nail on the head as far as RPM range. For normal driving you'd be hard pressed to see an improvement.
As far as filtering out more, do a little research. A comparative study I recall reading online actually found that the K&N's filtered out LESS. http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm

Message: I have a 02 4.7l. I put an AIR RAID cold air intake on. I got it off of
ebay. $36. The motor is loader! It takes 12-15hp to feel it in the
seat of your pants. If you plan to do your exhaust so on shop
around. You don't have to have a K&N. I also work in a independent
shop.

Message: K&N FIlters better than stock? thats a joke if I ever heard one. just listen to this. to make something flow better it needs to be less restrictive. also I had a K&N drop in filter on my 03 dak 4.7. I went to clean the TB and in the tube and intake manifold I had oil and grime and sand particles in there. hmmm wonder where all that came from? spent hours cleaning all that crap out. needless to say I pulled the K&N out and replaced it with a reg filter. no nore crap in there now.
sorry a 7HP increase to me isnt worth it letting all that crap go into my combustion chambers and scratching it all up. also it gets in to your oil. seen many UOA and they all had high silicon counts from people using K&N.

Message: I think K&N uses the thinnest layer of cotton gauze out of all the aftermarket filter companies. I compared one to my Airaid filter and the Airaid is noticably much more thicker. You could just about see through the K&N filter. I really don't see where you would get a whole lot of filtration from a K&N quite honestly. If all you are looking at is a 7 to 8hp gain, look into Airaid's Quickfit kits that just replace the airbox. It is a whole lot cheaper and really nice when teamed up with a Poweraid throttle body spacer. Also one thing I don't understand is that K&N just about soaks their filters in oil straight from the factory. Its no wonder you get oil in your throttle body.

Message: any body have a round style intake on their 318 and would an S&B filter be better? they are the only other company that makes those high flow round air cleaners and I think those round ones make a nice 6.75rwhp which means probably 10 or 11 in the engine maybe more.

Message: I removed the stock airhat on my 95 3.9L and replaced it with a K&N filter and edelbrock 10" round air hat. I did have better throttle response.
I never had issues with oil/crap getting into the intake. Maybe you used too much oil on it when you cleaned it?

Message: never cleaned it. was factory oiled. out of the box. you stick your finger down the intake tube with the TB off? if you havent I bet its in there.
also how long did you have it on there so far. it was 7 months when I noticed the buildup and the filter wasnt that dirty.

Message: the home brew one i made didnt do much in the low rpms other than help throttle response. but at 2800rpm there is a noticeable pull. as far as keeping the dirt a grim out stick with the stock unit and the K&N will just let more dirt and air through over a paper filter.

Message: I just replaced my intake for the second time. I have a 1998 318 and replaced the stock intake w/ a 10" edelbrock w/ a 2.5" K&N. I replaced that with a 14" Mr. Gasket P/N 1480 and am running the paper element it came with. MUCH BETTER! Lower pitched sound, and not as loud sucking sound. Could definitely feel an improvement. For V8s, I recommend a 14" air cleaner. (It's the size they used from the 1960s-1996 318's)

Message: Have you EVER seen an individual, not K&N, reproduce that dyno gain just from their intake.
Having done some minorly major mods, AND dynoed,
I think they are full of their own....
Anyone, with any gain, same conditions, from just their intake? Objective gains, like dyno #'s?
