Subject: Ball Joints IP: Logged
Message: I got an '03 QuadCab with the 4.7 liter engine last week and I immediately heard popping noises from the front end. I took it to a Dodge dealer and they replaced the upper ball joints under some service bulletin recall for free. Problem is I still hear the popping noises. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do next?? Thanks.

Message: Is it just when you turn it to the extreme right and left? Mine does it when I turn it to the extreme (as far as it will go) and stops if I just back it off a little bit. I had my ball joints looked at though and they said they were fine. Not sure what causes it but hasn't caused any other problems.

Message: no - it's usually when I hit the brakes going straight, right or left.

Message: That doesn't really sound like a ball joint problem if it is only when you hit your brakes. I believe if it were your ball joints, it would be doing it on more of a regular basis. It may be a caliper or ABS problem, but don't quote me on that as I am not an expert on these things. Hopefully someone else here can voice what they think the problem is. Goodluck!

Message: I honestly don't know, steve o. It may be the control arms don't like being turned to the extreme and are just protesting. I would imagine that turning it to the extreme left or right makes your power steering try to continue to pull even when the wheels will go no more. That might be the knocking noise, but I really don't know since I am just a tinkerer and not a mechanic. However, I do make it a note to have a mechanic check the ball joints whenever I am getting a oil change or tire rotation. Any other suspension/steering experts out there have a suggestion?

Message: When to turn all the way to the right or left at the end of travel
there are so metal stops. when you hit them some times they make
on hell of noise. If you know what to look for you can put a liitle
wheel bearing grease on them to make them a little less noisy. i
also worked at a brake shop. Stepping on the brakes and hearing a
clunk. Could be a loose pad or caliper. Get them checked soon.
Should be no charge for just a brake check.

Message: FYI - I dropped my truck off at the independent dealer I bought it from and the service manager advised me that they had to replace the passenger side tie-rod end and lubricate the "brake caliper pins" as they were dry. Hopefully this will eliminate the popping sound I heard.

Message: That's interesting. I hear the pop and it shakes my truck, and only does it when I back up and not always the same side. I just had the truck into the dealer for my yearly State inspection (which is free when I have it done at the dealer where I bought it) and they are very thorough. The only things they cautioned me on was the tires (Borderline) and the passenger side wheel bearing they said was starting to go bad, but not bad enough to have them fail it. Any thoughts on what that could be?
