Subject: check engine light '03 4.7 liter IP: Logged
Message: My check engine light came on today and when I check the codes by doing the on/off trick three times I get a P0344 code, a P0340 code, then a P done code. What do these mean?? Thanks.

Message: I just went to this website -http://www.obdii.com/codes.html - and it tells me that P0340 is "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction" and that P0344 means "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent". How do I fix this??

Message: It could start with the camshaft position sensor being bad. Make sure the wire connections are good. Make sure the sensor is securely attached. I don't know how to test the sensor, but if it's cheap just replace it.
The sensor is on the front of the passenger side head, pointing down, in front of the exhaust port. It comes off the head in a perpendicular mounting position.
If the code(s) persist(s) then it could the the sensor's tonewheel (under the valve cover) could be causing the problem.
These are good places to start...

Message: Typically when the MIL is on steady there is no drivability issue. If it blinks that is the warning that you should not continue driving; damage to something could occur. I'm not sure in your case, but if you have other transportation I think you'd be best to let the Dak sit until you get this sorted out...

Message: How did you pull those codes? Did you use one of those decoders that plug in under the dash? Ive priced those things at AdvanceDiscount and the one needed for "newer" vehicles was $150, didnt seem worth it to me if I just need an O2 sensor or something minor. Ive used one before when I had an '83 camero and it was dirt cheap. Any other way to get the codes without that device or paying labor. Are there cheaper ones out there that will do the job just as well?

Message: P0551 Power Steering Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)
P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
This is what mine pulled, The Emissions dont worry me, because of my county, unless it should?
My power steering has been making some bad whinning noises coming from pump/pulley along with burnt looking fluids, is the P0551 the culprit???

Message: there is a pressure sensor on one of the power steering hoses that is pretty well known for leaking. you should check it. usually when that sensor leaks it sends fluid through the wiring harness down to the O2 sensor on that side causing it to send false info to the PCM.
the P0442 could just be a defective and/or loose gas cap. the P0455 is probably a cracked or leaking connection in the evaporative system.
