Hi all,

I looking to buy a 2002 4x4 and have a couple of questions. What is the difference in gas mileage between the gear ratios, the dealership where I am at does not stock both only the 3.55. My second question is in regards to the transmission. While I enjoy shifting my own gears, if I build up an automatic will there really be any dif?

Thanx

Go with the 3.92's I read on hear all the time people wishing they would have put them in to begin with also invest in the LSD option, well worth it. My opinion with an auto is unless you have a stang or camaro etc... don't waste your time with a manual. I'm in the same boat I recently bought an 02 4x4 cc 4.7L with all the upgrades available, like anything I wish it was faster, (it's definitely not a dog by far) but if that's all you want is speed, buy an R/T. Not to mention the resale value of a 5 speed isn't so hot.

I agree with Clevite 77 EXCEPT to say that going with the 5 speed will:

1) Save you $ right off the bat since the Auto is a $975 option.
2) Save you $ on each fill-up since the 5 speed gets better gas mileage.
3) The 5 speed is damn fun to drive!

Other than that, yeah, grab the 3.92 gears and the LSD now. You won't be disappointed!

I couldnt disagree more, the 5speed is the way to go with he 4.7.Drive one with each and if you want power the choice will be easy, autos have 20-25% driveline loss and manuals 10-15% but its always a toss up between comfort and what you like best,3:55`s with the manual and 3:92`s with the auto is my opinion

12GA Dak, had some good points. 12GA Dak do you do any pulling? if so what's it like with a 5spd?

I sometimes wish I could rev the motor a bit higher before shifts, but I just turned in a 5 speed lease and before that I drove another 5 speed for about a year. I commute about 65-80 miles a day 7 days a week so it's really nice being able to just sit back and relax.

Above was just my opinion, I should have stated that better, I apologize.

Yeah I prefer the auto too because I shift gears for a living so it gets old pretty quick, IMO, although I'd probably also prefer the 5 speed if I had another job.

I just bought an 02 4.7 4x4 Club Cab SLT. I went with the 5-speed and the 3.55s. I dont think the 3.92s would be worth it with the 5-speed unless you are always pulling a trailer. First gear is pretty low already with the 3.55s. The manual is definately fun to drive. It is quite a bit quicker than the auto and gets better gas milage. I test drove the auto before I ordered my truck. I was nervous about the buying the 5-speed without test driving one first, but now Im glad I did it, I saved $1000 as well.

If you know how to drive a standard than you should go with that..... they can be faster if you have the skill like me. If you don't feel like having fun and just wanna be lazy and sit back then buy an auto. But me personally I'll drive two standard cars and then go to an automatic then back to standard then back to auto...etc. This will be what I do cause I'm sure by the time I have my 3rd auto I'll want auto.

Really depends on your situation.. If you want to have fun get the 5 Speed.. If you drive in trafic alot get the auto.

Personally I think the 5 Speed is better suited to the r/t crowd.

Definatelly opt for the 3.92 and the LSD. It's so worth if from the factory. I wish I upgraded to the 3.92 but I wanted my truck right then :(.

Let us know what you came up with.

I bought an '02 QC 4.7 4x4 3.55 LSD auto on DCX plan. I wanted an auto because my wife also drives the truck at times, and I really wanted her approval. And, she likes the thing so much she is driving it more than I expected. But, what really made up my mind was resale value. A friend took a big hit on a beautiful Ford ext. cab f150, 5.0 with a five speed. It took months to sell and he had to lower the price quite a bit. Autos are much easier to sell, by far. If you are not worried about resale or another driver, by all means GET WHAT YOU WANT. I don't pull a big trailer and the 3.55 is just fine, I can smoke the tires whenever I want. The gas mileage is generally dismal, but I only have 1400 miles on it so far.

Unfortunately Knobby the R/T`s have no 5speed as an option or I would have bought one myself,so I ordered my 01 Sport R/C 4x4 4.7 3:55lsd 5speed,loaded except for A/C and cruise and I have yet to see another combo like mine so I think its pretty rare and resale will be good. Some thoughts "my opinions" 3:55`s are perfect with 5speed and the stock 16 inch rims and tires, when you go bigger tires then 3:55`s are not enough, the 1-2 shift is awsome,5speed offer more control when off-roading,performance wise the auto`s start at a 10% disadvantage in HP and T/Q compared to a manual trans "driveline loss". Sorry to hear about the crap your going through with your truck,if I was you I woulda sent it all back, hope it works out for you

If you want off-the-line performance, tow more than once a month, like to row your own, want to save $1000.00 at purchase time, plan to put bigger than stock tires on, or any combination of these, then 4.7L/3.92/5sp is the way to go. You'll give up highway mileage though because of the higher RPMs you'll be turning. If you commute in traffic, tow once or twice a year or less, don't race people at every light, plan on selling your truck in a few years , don't want to spin your tires every time it rains or snows, or any combination of these, then 4.7L/3.55/auto is the way to go. You'll give up 0-60mph time (about 1 second) but get better mileage and a quieter engine on the highway. Either way get the LSD option, it's a must because you will spin the rears with either choice if you're in the mud.

Check my sig. The 5 speed and 3.92's are definitely the way to go. The 4.7 LOVES a 5 speed. As for wives, mine knows how to drive a manual tranny so that wasn't an issue for me. :)
