Sometimes it will not shift into 3rd unless i let off the gas a little. Happens in the morning most of the time or when i first start driving. i have a tranny cooler that was put on recently. i live in South FL it does not get that cold here, i read that it might do this in the cold. Fluid has been flushed every 20,000 miles. i just want some feel good feed back. 99 5.2 auto 4x4.

Sounds like a hard front clutch seal (2-4 clutch). Time for a rebuild.

Whats a (2-4 clutch)? The 42RE 44RE have front clutch, rear clutch and overruning clutch. Then the overdrive placed on the back of trans it has three clutchs.
Micheal when was the last time the bands were adjusted should be done every 30,000 miles. 2-3 are the same drum but it can't hurt to adjust the bands. Your problem could be a lot of things such as lockup solenoid, valve body on and on all do not mean a rebuild. Take it to a good trans shop they can tell a lot just from a road test then there is hydraulic pressure test and electrical test with DRB scan tool.
Good luck

Ok i've found out if i just let it warm up it doesn't do it. But now i went outside this morning and saw tranny fluid leaking from what looks like the radiator, its dripping down in front of the engine. Could it be tranny cooler lines? help please, i don't have very much money to spend on this.

Michael, I do not wont to beat Josh out of a sale, however befor you pull your transmission fix your trans cooler line and put a half bottle of Lube-Gard in it. The leak you mentioned is more than likely a cooler line. The 2-3 shift could be a sticky valve. Use the black bottle of Lube-Gard and drive for a few hundred miles.
Best of luck.

Have you checked your fluid level since the trans cooler was put on? Concern could be from low fluid level.

i was messing around with it late last night and found anouther problem. the cooler line above the trans. pan was not tightened all the way!ugh. and then i followed it to the radiator/trans. cooler and found another leak. i brought it to a friends shop this morning. he said it is a dealer only part and he has my truck for the day and said it would cost $90 to fix.

Josh, i'm still interested in your 44re for $200 plus shipping from your company.i would like a spare. it will take me a couple of weeks to get some money together. whats your e-mail address? i'll let you know when i'm ready, shouldn't be more than a month. i
