Subject: Timing chain 3.9/5.2 IP: Logged
Message: I was just wondering why the 3.9's always have to have their chain replaced and tightened and the 318 being basically the same motor doesnt have to..?

Message: At some point, they all received tensioners to maintain proper timing for the MPI over a longer lifespan. However, at some point, they all have to be replaced.

Message: I read somewhere (don't remember where) that the 3.9 cam-to-crank center distance is a few millimeters less than the 5.2, so the 3.9 actually starts out with a little slack, thus the need for the tensioner and the more noticeable effects from stretching.

Message: The later V8's have the tensioner as well and their cams weren't relocated. The tensioner is there to maintain accurate timing for the MPI as the chain stretches over time.

Message: Did you guys ever stop to think that maybe it cuz the 3.9 has two less cyl the the 5.2 thus it has to work harder and spin faster to be able to pull your truck around

Message: From a post by Larry (J&J Auto):
"You can and should use the tensioner even with
a double roller chain because it will eventually
rattle also because the cam was lowered .050
closer to the crank on the V6 mags why no one
has the answer."
