Message: Failed direct clutch. They're in the overdrive (Big surprise they failed). Say goodnight, Gracie. On your replacement, make sure you have a TransGo, Fairbanks, or Superior valvebody kit installed, and ditch the stock Shelby external tranny cooler in favor of a larger aftermarket unit unless you just have to keep it original.
Before you go for a stock rebuild, check out what's available. They list the A518, but also build the A500 if you prefer. Either will fit. I went with the A518 to pair with my 360 Magnum upgrade in my Shelby.

Message: Thanx for the help! Am going to Mass. to pick it up saturday(I'm in NJ), and the person I am buying it from says it drives, but he cant get it into reverse. What years can I swap the A518 in from? I may have to go with a used unit for now, and rebuild the original at some point later, so getting the right unit would make my life that much easier.

Message: Anything from 1995 and earlier. The A500/42RH or the A518/46RH will work. Note that the A500 uses a different torque converter than the A518. The 42RH and 46RH are the 500 and 518, just re-designated by Mopar in the early 90's. Do not use anything that ends with the RE designation (1996 and up). They have an electronic valve body and require the OBDII computer, won't run with the Shelby.
Also, something to consider. The overdrive on the A500 and A518 are the same. If the rest of the tranny checks out (and it usually does), you can maybe score a deal on just an overdrive and swap yours out. I've seen new overdrive sections (ready to bolt on) for $200 on eBay. Might find a used one for less. If you want to low-buck it til you can go with a really well built tranny, that might be the way to go.
Also on the used tranny market, the 1989-1991 518's had non-lockup torque converters and were in the full-size trucks and Ramchargers.
And remember that if the donor tranny was behind a 360, you'll need to knock the weights off the torque converter to have proper balance for the 318.
So is it red or white? Mine's white. #1246.
They're neat trucks with tons of potential.

Message: Dont know the number yet, will post it later today. Its a white one, no stripes on it, must have had some body work done at some point. It needs some more on the drivers door, then i will look for a stripe kit for it. Has the original wheels, missing 2 center caps. Also, the air dam isnt the original one, the fairing is missing, and I am not sure about the horn button, I cant see it too well in the pics I've been viewing. Will keep you posted later. Thanx for the tips on the trans, I will have it checked out this week.

Message: Number of truck is 664. needs lots of cosmetics, but hey what else are we working for anyway! Just cant get a trans at the salvage yard. Their puters say 1989 shelby only, nothing else it says will fit. I know there has to be more interchange than that.

Message: Huh? They're saying Shelby's have a particular tranny? Wrong! They're the same A500's that came with the V6 model. The only differences were a higher stall torque converter and some valve body tweaks to firm up the shifting characteristics. In fact, all Shelby Dakotas started life as V6 Dakota Sports. Any A500 or A518 will fit without any mods whatsoever.

Message: I knew they were yanking my chain! Still hard to find one anyway, being the OD unit usually blows before anything else. Still dont have the money (quoted $1000-1400 to rebuild mine)this month, but am getting antsy to get it on the road. I hope to find something this week, knowing that I can ask for a V6 unit, and it will get me rolling. Thanx for your help, will try to post some pics as soon as I can.

Message: Don't get rooked on the basics. Aside from specific Shelby spoilers, fog lights, electric fans, and stripes, the truck is V6 Dakota Sport. The dealer got me (3X the actual price) on my first set of disc pads with that "Shelby" trick. I didn't know any better then, but later learned it was the same semi-metallic V6 Dakota Sport pads. The engine is the same as the 1989 Dodge D150 318.

Message: Just scored a trans from a 1992 Dakota Sport! Has around 100k, hope it works out. Price was right, so I couldnt go wrong. Get to keep the one thats in the truck as well. I think the 92 is the 518RH. Will also be getting the flywheel as well, as this is probably the reason I would have to use my old converter in the exchange. Will keep you all posted!

Message: Sorry, number of truck is 668, not 664. Trans is in, truck runs and drives, now on to the other stuff. Looks like a radiator is in my future, and will be doing the thermostat tomorrow.
