Subject: Cleaned throttle body...trouble
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99, 5.2. I have been experience a lot of hesitation, power issues. My truck would get up and go fine but as soon as I hit 2500 rpm it would loose a bunch of power (surge and buck, stall out)Then it would "cough" a bit and clear itself out. Wel I decided to change my plugs (3923), wires, cap, and rotor. I also cleaned my throttle body, with two cans of cleaner by removing it.
Now the PROBLEM:
I go to drive the truck and the problems stated above are 10 times worse. I stall out as soon as I leave the drive way. If I rev the motor up fast the push the clutch in, it stalls. If the truck is under a load in any gear, it will surge, stall, or be "missing" until higher rpms are reached. I triple checked the location of the plug wires on the distributor cap.
On a second note the distributor cap and rotor were replaced less than a year ago and looked horrible. Looks like it was burnt. The contacts were half way there. The plugs were only about 3 months old (autolite 3923) and were white in color. Now my truck is not driveable, so it is sitting in my driveway. My girlfriend is missing work to drive me to work. Please guys and gals I need your help.
I figured maybe I screwed up the sensors so I replaced the already new TPS and IAC, but no change. Could it be the MAP sensor? My voltmeter is broken so I can't test it.

I don't see how it would be 10 times worse immediately after installing a new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, cleaned throttle body. Possibly my cam sensor/coil pick up?

Are the plugs white or light brown? White plugs usually indicate a lean condition or lack of fuel. I would be checking my fuel pressure and volume first.

Unfortunately, I had a check engine light before this issue (although there were no codes). Now I still have no codes for some reason. I have used the autozone scanner, and also tried the key on, off...method. NO CODES.
For christ sake, if the damn truck can barely run, stalls out, etc. you would think it would store a code.

The thing is, it will idle fine sometimes, then others it will just crap out. I am afraid that by checking the fuel pressure in the drive way, (not under a load) that all will seem ok, but when I am driving, the fuel pump can't keep up. I would rather not got through hassel and money I don't have to replace the fuel pump if it is not the issue.
A few of the plugs were pretty white. While the rest were a light brown.

Also, when the truck is stumbling, low on power, I can hear what seems to be a hissing sound. I don't know if that would help any ideas out there. I know it is not the intake air sound. It seems to be coming from the driver side...but then that is where I am when driving it. Only when it is under a load do I hear that sound.
Anyone local to Southern CA that know's there stuff, want to check it out?

Grab ahold of the TPS and IAC connectors and wiggle them. See if you possibly have a loose connection. Double check your secondary ignition. Do you have a vaccum gauge? Can you read MAP vaccum?

hissing sound...check for a vaccum leak. Maybe you left a vaccum line off somewhere along the line. Find that hiss!

I don't have a vacuum gauge, and my volt meter, is not working...got rained out the other day. I have checked around for vacuum leaks... but the hissing sound only seems to be there while my truck is having the power issue. The stutter issue seems to clear itself up at a higher rpm, then the hissing goes away.
The tps and iac connections are good.

Sounds like hissing from the IAC then. Recheck your secondary ignition if that's good...go to fuel.

IAC seems to be doing it's job. Check that ignition, then go to fuel.

I just did the plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires. (and checked over many times hoping it was a simply mistake I made)
thanks

Secondary ignition - the high voltage side that fires the plugs. The low voltage winding is called the primary. Since it got worse after you worked on it, the problem should be something you replaced or disturbed.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I use to see that when a coil was going bad. Double check the battery and charging voltage. Low voltage will make it run bad. I also agree, find that vacuum leak.

A friend of mine had a problem with a clogged fuel line/filter that caused bucking and stalling, but since the problem you are experiencing is worse since you've worked on it, I'm not sure that could be an issue here. Just my .02.

Only other option I can think of is you may have a bad vacuum hose somewhere. I had a vacuum leak on my old 5.2L Jeep Gr Cherokee that caused a lot of bucking at low RPMs. Ended up being a very small gash in one of the hoses that slowly got bigger till I could hardly drive it. Good luck finding the problem and let us know what you find out!

Could not find any vacuum leaks last night.
I pulled the cap, rotor, and all the plug wires last night and re-did installed them all.

I noticed that on the inside of the plug wires (where the electrical contacts are) there is di-electrode grease. Could this be my problem. The grease is preventing all the spark from reaching the plugs?
I reset my pcm, and my rpms stuck at 1000 rpm. I drove it on the freeway it all seemed well (except for the high idle). About a mile later it start bucking and surging on the freeway. I pulled off the freeway and the idle was down to normal (600rpm). Now I am back to square one with the problem.
