Message: hey guys I know my all my questions must be getting a little anoying but you guys have done this stuff and I haven't and I don't fubar my pickup.
I have narrowed it down to 2 possible cams
1.is the crane powermax with 434int./458exh.lift and 250int./260exh duration with a power band of 1000-4500 rpm
2.is the comp cams computer-controlled camshafts with 480int./480exh.lift and 254int./264exh.duration power band is 700-4800rpm
if anybody has these cams tell me how they are and how they affected your power bands and if any body knows what kind of horsepower results they gave you please tell me. and which one will give the best low end tourque.
thanks guys

Message: The best thing for you to understand about upgrading motor parts is one thing leads to another. If the rest of your motor is stock then a cam won't do much for you but waste fuel. With a new cam you should also install better fuel injectors, intake, maybe heads, exhaust(Headers),and depending on how high the miles are on the motor new rings for the pistons and mill the cylinder walls. You can't do an upgrade like that without setting up the motor to handle it, otherwise you waste money and time. Plan out your upgrade well and you'll be happy with finish product.

Message: truck guys right. The cam is the last piece of the upgrade puzzle since theres so many choices. The cam is the last thing you want to upgrade, that way you can maximize the performance of all the other upgrades you have.
If you wanna see what gives you the best performance invest in desktop dyno like I did. Its great for messing around to see in general what gains you get and at what rpm.
Results running Desktop Dyno 2003
Stock Dodge 5.9L 1999+ setup
249 bhp @ 3500rpm, 353lb-ft @ 3000rpm
Crane 434int./458exh.lift and 250int./260exh duration
248 bhp @ 4000rpm, 357lb-ft @ 3000rpm
Comp 480int./480exh.lift and 254int./264exh. duration
256 bhp @ 4500rpm, 356lb-ft @ 3000rpm
As you can see the crane cam didnt gain much at all but moved the peak hp to a higher rpm. The comp cam give slightly more gains, and moved the peak hp even higher than the crane.

Message: I forgot to mention, all those number are based on stock setup only, if you have other mods it will effect it aswell. If you tell what exactly you have I can try again.

I use Desktop Dyno which costs $75. They also have Desktop Dyno Basic which is $45. You'll have to read through and see which one is for you. It takes a little research to get your engine setup.

Message: The biggest advantage of the $75 version is that if can run a program where you tell it what you want either torque or horspower or whatever, tell the program what it can change to achieve that goal, and then it will tell what cam and such will yield the best results

Message: That's alot of miles. You would do better for yourself to invest some time in researching a complete rebuild. Like I said before you can't upgrade somethings and not others. Thats like putting high oct.race fuel in a lawnmower,it won't be long before something breaks. As for the dyno, use every resorce that you can. The best thing about that stuff is it takes alot of the guesswork out of what you need to get the motor power your looking for.
