Subject: What do I need? IP: Logged
Message: I just bought my 99 r/t about a month ago and it has some sort of dual exit exhaust but I don't think the muffler is aftermarket. How could I tell what it is? I am ordering a K&N intake and I would also like to get a 180 thermostat, what brand is best? I also plan on getting some Thorley headers and x-pipe with dual flowmaster 40 series. About the cat's though, I don't have emissions testing where I live and cops just don't care cause I'm out in the country. Is it gonna help performance if I leave the cat's off or should I just get some nice high flows. I'm not sure if actually having a cat would help me to keep some power or if they cause a loss. I do have a budget to live on and I don't want to spend a fortune so I'm having a friend do it all for me, just need to know about the cat's. Thanks guys for any help.

Message: hard to say what the exhaust is if it isn't stamped with any markings, the only thing I can say is look, and compare to pics of others. shouldn't matter though, especially since you say you already have plans to replace with flowmasters.
Hypertech makes a good thermo, but as easy as the 5.9 is to swap, any name brand should be fine... I used one from pep boys, same as advance and autozone, and its been true and working for over two years no problems. you can get another 10 degrees knocked out of underhood temps thru the use of an auxiliary tranny cooler. costs around 50 bucks, and REALLY helps keep the trans fluid colder, provides better shifting, and extends fluid life, great for towing, when the tranny works its hardest.
AS for the cats, well, I live where emissions are considered important, emissions testing is on its way to my area, so I can only ay that mine look like they are there... but for your purpose, High flows are an idea, as it'll keep your check engine light off. otherwise, you'll have to 'Trick" the second O2 in the system, to read as if its working properly, and reading the right gases. the rule of thumb with any modification goes like this.... you're engine lives off its ability to pull air in, and push it out. it runs best with the least restriction, less energy is wasted pulling air in, and shoving it back out. hence, the K&N FIPK ups performance by making it easier for the engine to pull air in. cats, as an item, are a heavy restriction on the exhaust, by design, its supposed to be, to compress the gases and burn off the unused fuel. long explaination stated short, the cats will be a restriction, loose em, but watch out for the check engine light. you might have to add em in if you plan on trading, its federal law, and a 5k fine if you get caught with em removed, but that depends on being caugth by someone who gives a $hit aboout your exhaust.
