P0171 code is a report of a lean condition on Bank 1. I think Bank 1 is the left side. I have had this code a couple of time after a fast acceleration. It seemed to happen when I was having trouble with the front left oxygen sensor. Since fixing that problem I no longer see this code.

After the O2 sensors heat to a certain temperature they are the primary source of information that the PCM uses to schedule fuel to the engine. An O2 sensor indicating lean will cause the PCM to increase fuel flow through the injectors. If an O2 sensor consistently indicates lean it could cause increased fuel usage.

P0171 The oxygen sensor is saying that the system air/fuel mix is far too lean (too much fuel is being added as a correction). The O2 sensor going bad will mess up the fuel milage. The question i would have is if the problem is with the upstream or downstream O2 Sensor. What I would do first is take the O2 Sensors out and clean them up, put them back in and see if that changes things. If there is too much of a buildup of carbon on the O2 sensor, it will give a lean reading.

I cleaned the drivers side pre-cat o2 sensor with contact cleaner on my 2000 4.7 liter, but ended up replacing it. I would recomend soaking the threads down first with some good penetrating oil and only use a box end, not open end wrench.

thxs so much for the help guys the o2 sensor was bad but it was not even tight. and was just rigged up 2 work. i bitched to the car lot and they agreed to cover it,which was 219 since they failed to catch it during their 100 point inspection well i guess now it's 101 lol. my gas milage went from 6.5 a gallon to about 16 i guess thats good since it is a v8 4x4.

Red,

I have a 2000 4.7 liter and replaced the drivers side pre cat o2 sensor. You say you have it removed but did not disconnect it electrically. Guess you turned it out and allowed the wires to twist in the harness.

Do this, follow those wires and the harness up and you will find one of those black plastic connectors holding the wiring harness to the chassis. Remove this and it will allow the wiring harness to drop down and up inside the harness is the 2 wire electrical connector for the o2 sensor. Not to hard to remove once you get under there and see what I mean. Also when you pulled out the o2 sensor, was there any oil or fluid coating the wires. If so, this is your main problem.

Thanks Jerry,

The wires twisted a bit but are okay, the sensor itself is coated with carbon and dry no oil, once out what do I clean the sensor with? Brake kleen, soapy water......

Red,

Brakeclean will work, also use a little dab of anti-sieze on the threads before installing. It will make it easy to remove in the future if you have too.

When I mentioned oil, I meant not on the sensor but on the wires in the harness.

I have read several posts and this problem occurs a lot with these Dodge engines. On the power steering pump discharge line is a pressure switch that blows and leaks steering fluid down the wires and harness to the o2 sensor.

Hard to believe but it happens and causes the engine to run rough with black soot coming out the exhaust.

You might want to be safe and check this switch to be sure. Very easy to get to, drivers side engine compartment off the power steering pump discharge line. Pop off the electrical connector and see if the switch blew and leaked fluid inside the connector. Good luck

Thanks again,

Sensors back in place and seem to be ok.
Down from the steering pump black knob with wires on it, is that it. if so how does it come off? It looks as though its a twist off or so.
Could this be why I get code P0551. The fluid level was low. Hmmmmmmm....

Sounds like you found the switch and connector, right next to the battery. 2 wire connector, one black wire and one green/orange wire.

connector has 2 tabs, one on the top and one on the bottom. Squeeze them both with your thumb and forefinger and pull straight off, no twisting.

check for oil inside the connector, but bet you will. If so the switch is bad and will need to be replaced. I bought a new one for about 15.00 from the dealer and replaced it myself.

As I said this oil travels down the wires and ends up at the o2 sensor wires, giving bad readings. Take some electrical contact cleaner and spray out the PS switch connector and also the o2 sensor wiring and you should be ok, also top off the PS reservoir.

sounds crazy but I have seen several posts about this switch going bad and coating the o2 sensor wires.

took me about a week to figure out.

You might want to go to a reputable shop, but have them definetly look at the power steering pressure switch. I still think this might be your main cause of the problem.

I will give the sensors a second shot after replacing the switch and cleaning around the sensor wires.

Thanks for the help, got a quote to remove and replace sensors for 360.00 CDN, I hate paying someone else to do repairs, learn as I go...
