I just recently had to change my Brakes and Rotors. I bought the truck one year ago this month. Since this state checks the brake pads once a year I thought I didn't have anything to worry about, then suddenly I heard the grinding. I first bought the pads, and then I took the rotors to be ground. Now add to the story that I only have 76k on the truck, I was surprised when the shop told me my thought to be good rotor was 0.003 away from failing and couldn't be ground. I guess what I want to put out is even if you change your brakes in time, make sure you have your Rotors scoped. KEEP SAFE!

R/T = auto transmission.

Most auto tranny drivers, do not use their parking brake.

Now, you're probably wondering why in he!! I'd mention that, right?

Your rear drum brakes are adjusted every time you stomp on the parking brake.
This keeps them working when they should, and taking some of the work off the front brakes.

Your rear drum brakes get out of adjustment, and put the kind of wear you're talking about on the front rotors, causing them to do more work then they should, and cause premature wear/ and warping.

But what do I know?

On some cars that's true, but I believe Dakotas adjust as you stop in reverse.

I'm not a brake mechanic by trade, but I thought that only happened when you reversed and really slammed on the brakes to skid.

After 90,000 miles on my 01 QC, 4.7 manual, (with the bigger rear 11inch drums,

original brakes, pads, everything, even the rotors I bought the truck with, new of course.

Normal braking in reverse should be all that is needed to keep them adjusted.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I do not shave my rotors(any more than they are allready. Todays rotors doesn`t have enough material to be lost on grinding, like old school ones, specially after so many miles of wearing. If they are warpt is because they are poor quality and too thin and can`t put up w/ heat. By shaveing it, you take even more material from it to the point that now it is going to warp much faster.
What i recomend, is an up grade on the discs, sloted or cross drilled, as sun as it start pulsating under bracking and new pads also.
