Would my MPG increase if I removed my CAT? I have a 99 3.9 bone stock w/ 123K miles. The county that I live in doesn't require an emissions test so I'm thinking about just removing it.

Opinions???

Actually, you probably would. But only because yours has 123K miles on it. They do get clogged over time. Depending on your fuel quality and state of tune, it may be in good shape, or not.

Mileage and performance will improve. Down side is what state are you in and how bad are the state inspections. I live in Mass and if you do not have a cat on a car it will be rejected until you install a new cat. Could be more expensive in the long run.

Why on earth would you be so inconsiderate as to removing a device that keeps the guy behind you from smelling unburnt fumes out of your tailpipe? I guess you could be just like 99% of those carburator stinkers out there!

hehe, I removed the entire exhaust from my 92 3.9 v6 and there is a MAJOR difference in power... But I also had a very badly clogged cat to boot... Sounds horrible but it'll have to do until I get a new muffler... Gas milage also seems a LOT better.

you may see no mouse increase at all. of course, this all depends on your location, and sometimes your elevation.

I had a loose cat under my truck for a while, until the smell started getting to me.... finally, I broke down, and knocked it out with a stick... only problem now is I can't get my dog to stop chewing on his corpse...

Wow. Pac man, thats a very unobservant statement. carbeurated had to be HAND tuned, while our modern exhausts and COMPUTER tuned engines release MORE oxygen then any other gas. only a poorly tuned car smells like exhaust. ever smelled a PROPERLY tuned OBD-II system with the cats removed? NO smoke, and no smell. trust the Tech here, catalytic converters are the illusion that the government and auto industry cares about the environment... it appeases EPA and tree huggers....

oh, and for ToolFan, try side cutters, it'll get rid of those stubborn nails on that cat real quick...just be sure to keep a propane torch around to cauterize the open wounds...

or you could try wrapping his paws with aluminum foil, but that seems to work best when you're drunk or after smoking a Jay, it gives the best entertainment from a cat.

Pacman, FYI, I also have a 72 RS/SS Camaro that I restored from the ground up. It has a Holly 670 CARB on it. Guess what? When I had my exhaust system put on, I had the guy hook it up to his emmissions testing machine just for kicks since he's a friend of mine. Not only did it pass the emissions test, but my buddy said that it had lower CO and NOx levels than most cars that he tests.

So, don't go spouting off at the mouth until you learn something about carburated engines buddy.

Shane I heard about this some older V-8 had better emmissions than most of today 4 bangers with all that emmisions crap on them. makes you wonder if you really need all this emissions crap on your vehicles. has anyone tested a car with the emmissions stuff removed. to see if it got worse or better or no change.

I also heard that if your caught removing your cat. yo ucan be fined alot for breaking federal emissions laws. heard the fine can be up to $5,000. to me I will just leave my cat alone and let it spit up hairballs every once in awhile.
