Subject: Bad CV-Joint ?

I was just wondering what the symptoms of a bad CV-Joint were. I have a type of 'whining' I hear on my truck. I can't necessarily isolate whether it's coming from the front or back, but I believe it is the front. Any other tips/suggestions appreciated. I am going to check the U-Joints for any play as well. Thanks a lot guys.

First due a visual check of the Cv boots for cracking or spitting grease. It usually makes a mess on the inner rim or suspension parts. The noise will usually be a clunking or clicking noise in 4wd with wheel turned. The univ joints will make a sqeaking noise during slow accelerations or a clunking noise when shifting with your foot on the brack from drive to reverse. Also due a visual check with the truck on a level surface in neutral w/e brake engaged move the drive shaft side to side or up and down look at the end caps to see if the center of the joint has any play between end caps. If no luck with this let me now when the noise present? Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, yeah I was planning on checking the ujoints. Well it must not be the CV-Joint then because it makes the noise in 2WD as well. And there is definitely no clicking. Its a hum/whine that slowly gets louder the faster I go. Could it be a wheel bearing or even ball joints? Thanks David

It makes noise anytime the truck is moving. It can barely be heard under 20mph but anything above that is fairly noticeable. No it doesn't make noise when in park or not moving. The noise doesn't seem to change much when turning.

In my old 93 Jimmy 4x4, I had a UJ on the rear driveshaft go. Low speeds didn't make any noises (well, other than normal :)) but that faster I went, it got to be a more and more ear pounding resonance.

Doesn't sound like what you have, but look closely at all your rotating components since it seems to increase proportionally with speed.

Could be the wheel bearings, I had a similar problem, it was an almost grinding noise, heard louder above 20 mph, and when accelerating or decelerating.

Chris, I would look at the wheel bearings. It is easy to check them and easy to change them as well. If you can isolate the noise to which end then you can jack the wheel off the ground and rotate the tire ever so slowly and feel for roughness and noise. On my 2000 4X4 the hub can be removed by removing the axle nut that holds it to the hub. There are three cap-screws on the back side that hold the hub in place. Just pull the caliper and the rotor and those three cap-screws and the hub will come off. The bearings can be replaced from there. The removal of the hub takes less than 10 minutes per side.

Let us know what you come up with.

Oops, I almost forgot. There is a support bearing in the end of the axle tube behind a seal. If that bearing is bad it will take a little more work depending on which axle model you have. The C205F model is not all that difficult but you will need a slide hammer with a special attachment to remove the intermediate shaft. I think the other models are easier. I have the C205F and have it all apart and replaced both intermediate shafts and half shafts. The total to do all that was about three hours but that was without the slide hammer attachment. The itermediate shafts were so worn at the ends that there was not snap ring groove left for the attachment to grip. I had to weld attaching points to the ends of the shafts to hookthe slide hammer to in order to pull them out.

Try this. Get up to about about 45 mph, where you can really hear it. Accelerate a little bit so the drive line is under a load. Still hear it?

Then back off the gas so the the truck is under no load at all. Did it go away?

Now get off the gas altogether, so the truck is deceleration - engine braking. Did the noise come back?

If the answer to all three questions is "yes", then it's most likely the rear diff. Dodge is famous for losing the carrier bearings at 60-80K miles. But could also be the U-joints and drive shaft bearings if there's a lot of heavy miles.

My 05 Dakota vibrates at 40mph too. I replaced ball joints, upper and lower control arms and tie rod ends. I also unplugged my transfer case because it was causing the motor to click. Still vibrates without the transfer case plugged in. always at 40mph and i noticed some leakage around the cv joint on the driver side where it meets the differential. Any suggestions?
