Subject: exhaust question damn flowmasters IP: Logged
Message: I got a 2003 cc 4.7 awhile back and when we got it my dad decided to buy me exhuast without asking what brand to go with. And he decided on going with flowmaster just cause of the sound, now im more into performance gains. So i have 2.5 inch piping to duels coming out and was wondering what i can do to fix this, and what to go with. Any help is appreciated.

Message: you aren't loosing a lot of power with that exhaust but you can always drop the pipes running out the back. what do you plan on doing to your truck? that was nice of your dad to get you a exhaust.

Message: Flowmaster's do sound nice.
But I'd NEVER bring out duals from a single muffler. Not unless I had REAL DUALS. But that's just me.
The single outlet form a single muffler almost sounds better than a dual outlet off a single muffler. It has a weird sound I think.
Do single in/out or drop the coin and run duals all the way!

Message: The 2.5" is plenty big for that motor, even with mods. 3" should be looked at if you get some type of forced induction. You may want to focus on a larger x-pipe or replacing your CAT with something "high flow".
If you are saying that the flowmaster has 1 inlet and 2 outlets, there isn't much you can do other than replace it with a single in, single out. If they split the tailpipe(i can't imagine they would)you can just replace the tailpipe.

Message: Everyone has their own opinions on sound quality and performance but your setup sounds about as good as you can get unless you want to run true duals with an X- over in the middle...I cant say that I have ever had anyone prove to me that single in, dual out loses anything over single in single out, or just a turndown after the muffler.... everyone has their own opinions and can give you their "numbers" which always seem to fit their veiw, but I think that a flowmaster is a decent muffler and your setup shouldnt hurt you any, especially with an upgraded cam...

Message: I went from stock to a Flowmaster Delta 40 2.5" Single In / 2.5" dual out the back and not only loved the sound but did notice a difference in the power I gained. After adding my HO cams and SuperChips, I really noticed the extra umph!. I considered going for 3" but the exhaust guy told me I would be losing power unless I went with some type of "forced induction" (turbo, supercharger, etc) so we just went 2.5" for now.

Message: like guys are saying that the 2.5" is fine unless you are running boost. the good thing about having that size pipe is you still have real good low end tq. my friend has no cats and a s/c and the cats really do not hinder the performance like people think. have fun fixing up the dakota but always remember that you should have gotten the 5.2L...haha!! i love the super 40 on my truck and notice a big increase in tq but the truck uncork runs really good. i can only do that on the weekends.

Message: if the length of the muffler is the same than its a quick replacement! if there is a 3in or more difference in length than you may have to buy some fitting pipe and a couple of claps. cheap stuff!

Message: I have a 93 318 and I want to know if it would be better to run my stock 3 inch cat pipe with the 2 3/4 reduce into a super 40 and no tail pipe or if it would be better to run it wih taking the 2 3/4 reducer out between the cat pipe and the muffler

Message: PB
in my a opinion that will make no difference in the performance of you dakota! so i think you would be fine with just using the reducer. on my truck i have no pipe running out the back. it gives the truck a deeper sound when you do it that way. good luck :)

Message: The REAL restriction in the factory 4.7 exhaust system is at the Y-pipe: only 1 1/2" inside diameter intersection necks. Magnaflow makes a mandrel-bend dual 2 1/2"-into-3" Y-pipe that will really maximize the flow gains downstream from hi-flow catalytic converters/ mufflers/ pipe diameters and/or cat-back duals.

Message: Kevin, i don't think that you will notice much if any difference by going back to a single tailpipe or by keeping the duals. I've tried a few different set up and they all felt very close to the same. The major bottle neck in our exhaust is in the Y pipe and intermediate pipe. I would stick with what you have and save up for the other mods planned.
Nothing flows like a straight pipe
