Subject: Questions about my 99 R/T

Okay, so I just bought myself my very first dakota. I have been looking for an R/T for two years now and I was pretty excited to finally purchase my 99 rc R/T. I am a little concerned about the transmission though. The tranny doesn't seem to want to shift into 3rd unless I left off the gas a little or until it hits 3800 RPM, and this is not at full throttle, this is just normal driving. Oh, and I'm not sure what the typical gas mileage is in the R/T but I am averaging about 13 mpg. It came with a dual exhaust and I think there may be a shift kit or something because it shifts pretty hard unless I give it a lot of throttle. I also want to put on headers and a true dual exhaust. What sort of piping is needed for this and should I go with 2.5" or 3" and should I also go with some high flow cats? Thanks for any help.

What do you plan on doing with this truck? While I don't have Dodge R/T specific knowledge, I can tell you that a motor with a cam as small as the 360 has and the fact that it is a torque monster, you will regret putting headers and 2½" duals on there. It will reduce your back pressure enough to kill your low end grunt.

Make sure to do your homework before you buy something you "think" is cool. More often than not, people buy the wrong combinations and it doensn't produce the way it is supposed to... other times it actually hurts rather than helps.

RACE ON!!!

Ryan,

I have a 2000 R/T. My gas mileage is around 14 mpg. You definitely need to feed them horses!
As for the transmission. Mine seem to come apart all at once. It was starting from the light in 2nd gear. I had it rebuilt completely for $1900 with a 2 yr/24,000 warranty. Worth every penny. Now she really scoots! Good luck and enjoy the ride.

that sounds like a shift kit ryan. i think before you do the headers do a chip like superchips or mopar chip. that way down the road the truck wont be bouncing of the rev limiter, the chip will give you more of a gain than the headers. 13 mpg is damn good for the R/T two of my friends have R/Ts and one is only getting 9-10mpg cc. if you live in southern Ca than i know a trans shop thats cheap and does great work. good pick on the truck. i was pretty disappointed when 6 months after get my dak that the R/T where going for less.:( daks really drop down in price in the less few months. i was going to sell my dakota and get a small beater truck but know i would only get $4500 or less.

[ and some mods to blow it up]

What is the rev bouncing that you are talking about? Because the other day I was taking my friend for a ride and I decided to give him a little show and the engine was hitting the rev limit and kept bouncing off of it. What is it that could cause that? And why would I be dissapointed with headers and true duals? I plan on getting a bigger cam for my truck next spring and all the other things I want to do will be next spring. Oh, and with the mopar performance PCM, does 93 octane need to be used?

You should use 93 or your motor might ping if you get a new PCM. If you plan on doing heads and an intake manifold true duals and headers are the way to go. After all the more air you can pump equals more HP. For a pretty sweet dual setup check out www.gsmotorsports.com, you can get either a 2 or 3" set up. I bought the Superchips programmer over the PCM since I can retrieve my own fault codes. Plus they both cost about the same if you look around.

Hey Ryan sounds like u do have a shift kit in that R/T of yours. I have a 2002 regular cab R/T. I have a few mods on mine and the best one has been my Hypertech Programmer. I also have the PPH and y pipe with no cats and a single 3" pipe with a spintech muffler. Alot of people told me things about lossing torque, but thats all bull! I didn't loss nothin , just gain performance over the whole powerband.

PPH/with y pipe, no cats
Hypertech Programmer
Rigged APC intake
14.5@94mph with a 2.3 60' due to bad traction

Hi Ryan, You didn't say anything about fault codes. If you did, you can go to most Autoparts stores and find out the code. A couple of things came to my mind, first the Speed Control Sensor, the second was the Throttle Positioning Sensor. I've had to replace both. I would also check the tranny fluid to make sure it is clean and full, but considering the problems Dodge had with that tranny, if it hasn't gone bad yet and you are around 70k for miles I would take it in and have the tranny fluid and the filter changed. Hopefully the previous owner wasn't an idiot and put something other than ATF 3 or ATF 4. The best stuff to put in there is ATF 4 or AMZOIL's ATF. That Tranny needs fully Synthetic Fluid or the tranny won't last long. Other things to look out for is the O2 Sensors and the Fan Clutch. With the Fan Clutch you will see it slowly heating up little more by little before the Fan Clutch goes out all together. I hope I helped.
