How many of you have or know someone that has a plow on their Dakota? I'm interested to see how much wear and tear it will put on the front end.

i have a 7 foot western unimount on my 2000 dakota.. other than the torsion bar adjustments its a fantastic unit.. the LSD makes a huge difference.. it'll plow through anything and it won't take any prisoners (especially if theres a few hundred pounds in the back)..
The western is quick and easy, it takes less than 5 minutes to put it on and when its off, the lights, and harness (except for a bracket on the bottom) all come off, I think the fisher arctic and meyers are all that way now though too...

just my $.02

Been running 7 1/2' regular duty Fisher on the Dak for 5 years, passes inspection every year with no wear problems. Had a set of ball joints replaced because of factory recall, but they didn't have any play in them. For anyone who has to haul it over the road much, I'd recomend the light duty model.

Modain - that's plow hombre to you ! ;-)

I went to a Fisher dealer today and told me the problem with 4.7 dakotas was that the oil filter is nearly impossible to get to with the plow frame on. Do you have a problem with it?

You could go with one of those oil-filter relocation brackets..I think Be-Cool and B&M sell decent kits. I have one but havent found a decent place to mount it yet. I got mine for my 5.9L just for ease of changing the filter.

I bought the truck with the plow installed, and I've got no oil filter problems what-so-ever.. Then again the western plows are a bit lighter duty than the fishers! I do notice on hard bumps my torsion bars are much too light for the plow however, even at almost full tension... I wonder if anyone makes a heavier bar for daks?? Make sure you get your dakota undercoated religiously too if you're runnin a plow..things tend to rust up and rot out on these little beast trucks in absolutely no time at all! I had to replace the front brake lines already!

Just a thought or two

Oil filter is easy to access through the left front wheel well - no problem. I do the change when swapping my snow tires for the season.

For a long time you could get a decent new plow set up for around $2000. Putting the plow on my '00, I learned those days are over. Price will vary depending on brand, quality, size...
For a reliable estimate, probably best to ask a dealer near you. Plow dealers don't seem to be high pressure salesmen, just regular people whose busness is plows - no hassle in asking the price directly. A good accessory would be the deflector on top if you expect to plow anything deep.

I really only plan on plowing my driveway, maybe a few more. It's either a plow or snowblower.

That's about all I do; it makes sense for me with a 700' driveway and large parking lot. Then the inlaws I take care of take care of me with free cord wood - no heating bill. If your driveway isn't too big, a snowblower might make more sense for you - puts you out in the weather, but cheaper and no lawn scarring. Also less room to store.
