Subject: Overhead Console IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone please send me a picture of what style Overhead Console belongs in an '04 Quad Cab V8 Sport Dakota. I've seen many on Ebay claiming to be for the 04, and many times they're different. I have what I hope is the right one, but still need the mounting bracket. If your '04 quad has an overhead console and you can send me a pic I would be extremely grateful......Max

Message: If you are trying to put the digital temp/compass/trip console in where the std console was be aware that in order to do that you need a whole bunch of other stuff to go along with it.
The wiring may or may not be there already. It's a flip of the coin wether it is there or not. The control module is different because it reads the information from the trip, mileage, etc. You will need all the sensors that make it work and then it may or may not work right. This is from experience so get all your ducks in a row before you opt to buy the console.

Message: Thanks for the insite Bill but I have everything (wiring harness etc...), I just need to make sure I have the correct style Console as I've seen several different styles depending on year. If anyone out there has an 04 with an overhead console and can either describe it or better yet send a picture, I would truly appreciate it....Thanks

Message: You know, here we go again,
If you look in the archives, (don't blame you, I wouldn't want to either), you'll find alot of threads about this.
I did mine on my 01, install was $0, puter new in the box was $80, off a guy from these boards.
I read all the hundreds of dollars threads, turned out to be EASY, 20 min. job.
Don't believe everything you hear!

Message: Todd,
How much were all the sensors needed to make it work? Let's see, you need the compass, the temp sender??? Or did your Dakota come with all the right stuff and all you had to do was plug the $80.00 control module in and go? My 2000 would have cost more than it was worth. It didn't have any of the sensors. Mine does not have the wiring either. Did yours? There's more dough. Heck the consoles are cheap. There is one on eBay right now for $25.00 "Buy it now".
I don't know about the other threads concerning this subject. I saw a guy post a question and since no one was answering him I did. I can only speak from my own experiences and mine, in regards to the digital overhead console, was more than I was willing to spend or go through.
I don't remember ever saying anything about hundreds of dollars either nor did anyone else in this thread for that matter. All this is rather a moot point as CKep has all the goodies and is on the road to having the digital overhead console.
Life is good ;^)

Message: Bill, et. al.,
Compass is IN the computer. In your owners manual, theres a calibration section. Consists of doing three 360 turns in unison.
Comes with everything else, in the BUS. The BUS, is the one wire digital data control system, that everything is hooked to. Otherwise, there sure would be a LOT of wires running around. Ah, the digital age! they all have their own codes, etc., on ONE wire.
the wiring? The three wires-about 5ft long, that came with my computer, ran under the liner, down the A piller, and to the fuse box inside the Lt door panel. Hook those up correctly, and viola!
12 volt, ground, and BUS
Easy as pie. Everyone, including the dealers, want to make it seem sssooooo hard to do.

Look here: http://www.wjjeeps.com/evic.htm
and here: http://alucinari.net/jeep/kj/evic_install
Clearly, not all the info pertains to a Dakota overhead computer install (they're Jeep sites), but there is good general info, wiring hookup tips, and schematics sprinkled in.
That second link will also let you know how to tell if you can put one in your Liberty.

Message: Well, I didn't eve nbother to ask a dealer!
I did my homework, mostly on here, then I tried it myself.
When I figured out that all the data, travels over one wire, and a 12v, and a ground, it was easy. I sliced the data wire to the bus wire behind my data control port, which is for the OBD2, under the driver side dash, near the front, the data communications port.
