Subject: looking into newer truck, what to expect IP: Logged
Message: Alright, here it is, I found a 98 extended cab dakota 4x4 for sale by a dealer in my area with 79,000 miles on it with a v-8 (not sure if its a 5.2 or 5.9). thinking of trading in my 98 reg cab v-6 2wd with 5spd with just over 99k on it. What can I expect for gas mileage numbers compared to my 6er? I think the ext cab has an auto trans and it has a soft tonneau cover. I know about the ball joint problems (had them replaced on my current truck)but what else to look out for?

Message: Tough to say, without you telling us your v6 milage; or which engine to compare to. Those who really work or flog the 6 seem to not get much better milage than the 5.2. If you're a flatlander who drives like a little old lady, it could be a different story...

Message: He's right. But I would expect your mileage to go down. Why? 4x4 costs 1-2mpg. Auto costs 1-2mpg. And you'll like the V8 so much you'll be trying to roast the tires at every stop light.
But, if you need the 4x4 and V8, that's a small price to pay for the capabilites to be gained.
I think the bottom line is, don't worry about the fuel mileage. It is what it is. If you need a 4x4 and a V8 (or just want it), get it. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Message: Well i get about 16-18 with the 6er with mixed city and hwy driving. Obviously with 4x4 i'd go play in the mud n snow once in a while. Do i really need 4x4, probably not, but i do need the extra room with a club cab. The one i'm looking at is an automatic trans but doesn't say what engine but its the slt trim so i think its the 5.2L.

Message: My way of thinking > If it's on a Dodge lot the owner most likely had good luck with the truck and bought another > If it's on a ford, chevy or etc. lot I'd have a lot of questions to ask the previous owner plus put it through a very serious examination > In fact > Check it out what ever/where ever you buy >

Message: If it is a 5.2, milage should be fairly close to what you are used to. While that's the most likely motor, I'd never assume that's what it is because thay didn't say - with gas prices what they are, they might just not be advertising that its the thirstier 5.9.

Message: i own the 98 5.2 in a cc slt auto 2wd 3.55 open diff 152k and get close to 15mpg and with a heavy right foot i get 13mpg. its all on how you drive it but you wont have to rev the truck up high at all to get it to move. when drive the truck easy it gets up to speed quick with out having to rev it past 2,300rpm
if the truck is 4wd and slt its a 5.2L the r/t only comes in 2wd and r/t trim package.
and some mods to slow it down!

Message: went and checked the truck out, on a small family owned lot, test drove and then asked what they would give me for mine in trade. They were only going to give me a lousy 2,500 for mine on trade. I laughed at them and told them thanks for wasting my time. A couple months earlier I had been out looking and found a 03 ram 2500 heavy duty with the hemi, quad cab, st trim and towing package. I had the dealer up to 4,000 without even looking at my truck in detail. Glad now that i kept mine because that was before gas went way over $3 a gallon.

Message: Trade in value depends on a lot of facters. One of them is actual value of your truck. The previous dealership may have offered you $4K, but he may have planned on getting half that back in the price of the new truck.
Hard to say without a lot more details. But they could have been offering you a good deal.

Message: i thought the 5.9 was only available in the R/T and the quad cab, didnt think it was an option for the CC/RC non R/T
anyway, my 2001 Ram 5.9 gets anywhere from 13-14 on highway and like 11-12 in the city
9-10 towing 3000 lbs

Don't know if you were being sarcastic to Kowalski or what. If not, my apologies. If you were, that's not nice. Go stand in the corner.

Message: I know that when I ordered my QC 4x4 back in 2001, the 5.9L was an available option for the truck. It was like a $1000 option whearas the 4.7L was a $590 option. I opted for the 4.7 L not because it was cheaper, but because I could get a manual transmission with it. The 5.9 l was only offered with an automatic. Hope this helps.
