Subject: fan clutch IP: Logged
Message: I have an 02 Dakota QC w/4.7. I've just went thru the third fan clutch in 2500 miles? It runs a little high w/o the fan being functional, but absolutely over heats on the end of a long tow ( boat) w/o it? I'll have to get another in the spring, but this is the most ridiculous recurrent problem I've had with a part? Any suggestions on what may be causing this.
Joe

Message: i can't tell what's creating the problem unless you hit a few bad ones. i have doubts about some of the junk that A/Z, Advanced or O'Reilly's is selling nowadays. try a factory unit or you could eliminate the clutch fan all together and either add a pusher fan in front of the radiator or replace the stock electric with a high performance unit or dual fan unit. also an aux trans cooler would probably help.

Message: Thanks for the reply. I got the last two at NAPA? I do have an extra pusher on the front and have a factory trans cooler.I put in the extra electric when I was originally trying to find out the overheating problem. Had gone to dealership and they were no help as they said there was no problem... until I replaced the fan. So easy to tell when the fan clutch is gone as you know when the roar is gone when accelerating...haha

Message: what all have you done to try to aleviate the overheating prob besides adding the pusher fan? i'm thinking there is something that was overlooked for you to have that problem.
i have an '00 QC 3.9 5spd. 195 tstat, no clutch fan and have never even got mine to 210 idling in traffic in south louisiana summer. maybe a bad or not high enough pressure rad cap?

Message: Mine went bad w/ 60 k miles, under warranty, and after geting it replaced, i got that out again and never put it back. All i have to do is to turn the AC on when the trafic is more stoped than going, or wait for the eletric fan to engage automatically. The prob w/ leting it to come automatically, is that you have more than desired temp variation.
Ihave no probs at all here on Cape Cod, and if you do get it out, keep it on a vertical position while stored.

Message: Thanks to all for the replies. My truck never overheats- only after pulling the boat a long ways and then idling. And it doesn't do that if the fan clutch is working. When I replaced the bad ones it pulls great... I've replaced the radiator cap, flushed the rad, put in water wetter... The truck won't overheat even with the fan clutch being bad if I'm not pulling my boat. I wa just wondering how I could get 3 bad fans in only 2500 miles? I don't drive it that much except to haul my boat. The 2500 miles was over the summer ( 5 months)? Any other thoughts woud help? Thanks.
