Message: I am wanting to add a little performance to my motor. I am looking to install a cam that has a moderate loping sound to it and will install without changing anything in the valve train. I am more concerned with the installation of this cam - What are the procedures for installing a cam in a '93 318?

Message: Don't expect to change to a more radical cam and not change anything else in the valve train. It just won't work. You'll try, and everything will seem to bolt up correctly. But then when you run it it will be noisy and not perform as well as it should. You'll end up going back and doing it right.
The biggest change is that you need a way to adjust the rocker arms. The greater lift of the new cam will change the geometry. The Magnum engines have a pedestal mount rocker. This is great during manufacturing, because the line workers can't do it wrong if they try. But it's not so good for us, because there's no room for mods and adjustments as the years go by.
The easiest but most expensive solution is studs and roller rockers. But you can do without it. You'll need a checking valve spring set and an adjustable checking push rods set. By shimming the rockers and buying the right length push rods, you'll get the geometry and valve lash correct. It's tedious, but inexpensive.

Message: A cam that sounds really cool may not perform as expected without additional mods. Get a cam that meet your performance expectations. Depending on whether you get a reground cam or one made for your engine you can offset the cost of adjustable rockers by not having to buy push rods. If you are going to all that work work get the parts you need to do a quality job. Also get yourself a manual before you start. It's the cheapest performance investment you will ever make.

Message: On the lopey cam issue, this lope is caused increased overlap resulting from increased duration and/or lift. This means low vacuum at lower rpm's. Low vacuum usually makes for unhappy computers, so that's one more issue, unless you pop for some custom work to adjust for it.
