Subject: white gunk ???????? IP: Logged
Message: I have recently purchased a 2000 dak with a 4.7L. I changed the oil the other day and found a bunch of white gunk inside the oil filler tube. What is it,why is it there and what can I do to stop it. I live in Canada so I don't know if the weather has somthing to do with it? Thanks for any help or advice.

Message: yes cold has something to do with it. I am told its condensation. beings our tube is plastic and coold faster than the rest of the engine. I just clean it out and go with that. havent seen it happen so far using syn motor oil but it hasnt gotten really cold here yet.

Message: Its normal, though that doesn't mean I like it.
I run Mobil 1 and I still get it.
It is due to the PCV being in the filler neck like that. The PCV vents fine oil spray into the filler neck which mixes with condensation that forms because of the cold. The white gunk is emulsified oil.
The better the oil, the less gunk you should see. Better oils resist water better.

Message: caulk04.. correct me if im wrong but I thought the air flow was out of the PCV into the manifold... not backwards into the filler neck .... just like the 318 and the 360.... a friend of mine found that the gasket/o-ring on the filler cap didnt make a complete seal... he did a mod to it ( not sure what) and it cured most of the moisture problem

Message: It may...never thought to hard about it. Even if it does go the other way, it would suck the oil mist up and still do it.
I dunno, it makes a mess no matter what.

Message: Coming off the PCV valve is a hose that goes to a hose connection on the intake manifold, way in back by the firewall. Why Dodge did it that way is anybody's guess.
Anyway, crankcase fumes and vapors are pulled into the intake manifold by engine vacuum.
The direction of flow is from crankcase to intake manifold, via the oil filler and PCV valve.
