Subject: P0456? 02 Dakota 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Hi All,
First off, thanks for this board. It has already saved me some money. Anyway, I did the key thing suggested on a thread here to get a code because my check engine light came on. I got P0456, anyone know what it's definition is? I'm suspecting it is the gas cap seal and going to run to Autozone tomorrow for a replacement. Of note, I had this happen a couple of weeks ago, took to the mechanic who charged me $100 to tell me it was a "loose" gas cap. UGH. Thanks.

Message: P0456 is a small leak detected in the fuel evaporative system. The usual culprit is a bad gas cap. However, I have heard there is a PCM flash (via a TSB) that corrects the erroneous occurence on 2002 Dakotas.
One night long ago I got this MIL shortly after filling up my QC. I know I put the cap on properly (twisting past multiple clicks). I cleared the code and it has never resurfaced.
You might get of lucky with a new gas cap, or maybe a PCM flash if it is truly the PCM's fault.

Message: modain - thanks much for your reply. Unfortunately, I just put in the replacement gas cap from Autozone ($7.99) and my check engine light is still on. Should I unplug the battery for ten minutes or so to reset the sensors? Also, what are the abbreviations you used in your reply (PCM flash, TSB, MIL, QC)? Sorry for the amateur questions, but I am not much of a gear-head. And is there a trick to resetting the sensors that involves putting the key in accessory position and pumping the gas pedal three times? Thanks!!

Message: to reset the PCM you can either, disconnect the + terminal from battery and turn the key to start for 10-15 seconds or got to the PCM itself and unplug the connector nearest the firewall for a minute or 2 and then reconnect it.
as far as the key on and gas pedal thing, that is a GM deal to reset the "change oil" light. my wife's '99 Gran Prix GT had that.

Message: Cool, thanks all. Here is an update: so I bought the new gas cap but the check engine light still came on with the same error code (P0456), so I put the original cap back on, diconnected the battery for about ten minutes and that shut off the check engine light. That was two days and about 150 miles ago and the light has stayed off. Crazy.

Hope this helps...

Message: I want to thank everyone who's posted for this site. You've saved
me a expensive and unnecessary trip to the dealer.
My MIL light came on yesterday morning. I had the phone in my
hand to schedule an appointment when I thought, "let's google the
problem." There it was. The gas cap wasn't on properly. It took a
bit the the light went off. Problem solved.
Thanks, ya'll.

Message: just my 2 cents: i went in for an inspection thinking that if i disconnect battery lead to cancel check engine light that has P0456 code and inpection station claimed that the truck computer is not ready for emmissions test so i had to pay the $37.00 anyway. thanks to new york state rules.i guess it pays to repair these sensors asap.

Message: I am no where near being a mechanic and I cannot figure out the problem I am having with my 2005 Dakota 4.7L. On random occasions, I will come to a complete stop and the truck will die. I put it in park and start it right back up. I put some fuel injector cleaner in it, but was wondering if anyone would have any ideas as to what is causing this.

Message: Sara,
With all due respect,
start a new thread with your problem as the subject.
You can do this by going to the main page and under forums, in the General, or V8 board, look at the bottom for the form.
I'm sure you'll find your answer better this way.

Message: i am having the same problem on my '03, but after smoking the entire evap sys. we narrowed it down to this thing called a leak detection pump, or some modles call it a natural leak detection pump. Unfortunatly the dealership told me today that it was over a $100 to replace it(just the part).

Message: its just about to hit 80k. factory warranty is gone. ive heard rumors that emmision devices are supposed to last up to 100k, but that might be a battle i'm not ready to take on. be my luck that dealership would want to do a full blown diagnostic and stick me with the bill, just to get a "free" emmision componet replaced.
P.S. do you know of a link where i can find the federal law stating this.

Message: Why don't you just google it ? I think it's 8 years or 80,000 - so watch the milage ! Then ask the dealer ship why it wouldn't be covered. Supposed to cover pretty much all pollution related stuff, except wear items like spark plugs and filters.
