Subject: Stumped - 93 5.2L stumbling problems

Not sure how to describe this other than the following:

When driving, the truck appears to stumble...has no power, almost backfires as it decreases in speed and power.

This has happened twice in the last month. If I shift to neutral, the engine seems to have lots of power, rpms rise, it revs etc... but when put back in drive the truck loses power.

I have replaced the fuel filter (on frame rail), air filter, pcv valve. Did that a couple of weeks ago. today the stumbling happened again.

I have no idea other than a possible sensor, something to do with the vehicle under load? Cause when it's in neutral, it revs to the moon.

Any thoughts?

this might sound stupid but do you go to the same gas station? it could be bad gas. also it sounds like a good tune up is in the near future. try new plugs and plug wires, maybe even some fule injestor cleaner. that might help but keep your view on the problem small then worry about larger problems such as fule pump or replacin the injectors.

yeah, i thought about the gas i put in her, but why would it stumble only when driving, when I put it into neutral, the engine revs fine.

I did get gas at two different stations than normal when this has happened, but what are the chances that the two stations had bad gas. it starts fine, idles good otherwise, makes me think it's some kind of sensor...maybe in the tranny?

i dunno, won't hurt to do a tune up for sure. just hoping someone could lead me down the right path if they had similar experiences.

thanks,
greg

i havent had that problem but i belive the reason why it idles fine in nuteral is because the motor isnt under any strain from the trany. i dont think its a trany problem but more of the truck starving for gas problem. in my truck in nuteral it revs up at a constant idle, when in drive it idles down because the trany puts a strain on the motor. (acctually every truck does this not mine) so u might need to increase the timing on the truck. it might be idled to low that when the strain on the motor from the trany it makes it run rough. but then again never had that specifc of a problem.

Sounds like your timing is off. Try a timing light?

Don't try to set your timing, it will jack the computer up!! Does your truck pop or backfire on decel? Make sure your plug wires are good.Don't just look at them, test them with an ohm meter.Check the cap and rotor to see if they have carbon buildup on them or if they are worn any. Check your TPS and take your TB off and clean it with TB cleaner.Check for intake leaks. While you have your TB off look inside the intake to make sure there is no oil in the bottom if there is take it off and replace the gasket.
My 93 likes high quality parts. Goodluck

How old is your cat? How many miles on the cat. If it is plugged up you will get similar symptoms.

Thanks guys for all the info.

I've owned this truck for only a year now, it's only got 61,000kms on it. It had sat for a couple of years before the last owner sold it. It was owned by 2 older gentlemen, so it hasn't been run hard...maybe thats part of the problem.

woodrow, thanks for the tips....I hadn't put any wires or plugs into it yet, all "looked" ok, but maybe I should go ahead and do it anyway. There is no popping or backfiring on decel, just when it had it's "stumbling" issues. Thats when I noticed the popping and backfiring.

Thanks everyone so far, I'll try and get at it this weekend, maybe do plugs, rotor wires and all to start.

Greg

I had a simiar prob in my 93 4x4 5.2 it would stumble at idle and buck while driving. i found the main pob was a burnt plug wire grounding out on the exaust. that fixed the stumbling problem but also made another prob more prevelant. a bad coil it was loosing power off and on. it would loose all power like u said and rev fine in N. it only happened once while driving more often it was at gas station when i would try to start it hot. since replaced the entire ignition system w/ msd and not a problem since. Knock on wood that i didnt ginx myself.

Were you having these problems from the start or did it run OK right after you bought it? I'm asking this because gasoline won't stay good for 2 years, you might have a gummed up fuel system. Have you run any fuel system cleaner through it? What's the fuel pressure look like?

thanks again guys for the input. I'm up to my neck in snow(not really, but we have some!!)I haven't gotten around to monkeying with the truck yet.

Rob C, the trucks just done this twice in the last two months. I hadn't had any previous problems. hopefully when i replace the wires and plugs, that solves it.

Thanks for now,
Greg

The tps in your TB as Woodrow stated is more than likely your problem. Get some carb cleaner and clean it off.

Here's the basics: Give it a tune up first, Plugs, wires, Rotor & expecially the Distributor cap. Also run a better quality of Fuel System cleaner through it for a couple tanks full. If it's still giving you problems then I would also consider the timing chain, but you don't have to tear the engine apart to check that. How I would do it is this: Find the plug wire for plug #1 then set the timing mark for top dead center (TDC). When you take the distributer cap off you will be either at TDC, or your distributer will be 180 degrees off. If it is at TDC check to see if your rotor lines up with the tab on the distrubutor (I don't know if your Distributor has one, but that is the way you check the timing on a 99 5.9 engine. Anyway, next turn you crankshaft 2-3 degrees left & right and watch your distributor. The question now is, does it move immediately or does it show a delay in movement that woud give you the indication of a loose timing chain?
