Subject: O2 sensor??

Message:
about how long do the O2 sensors last before they go out? my check engine light came on the other day so i disconnected the battery and then hooked it back up and the light has never come back on yet. i think the O2 sensor might be dirty or something like that because everything seems to be running fine. It also just passed smog a month ago. 2000 QC 4.7L 4x4

Sounds like you're just guessing and haven't checked what code was set. Key on off on off on (not start) -that will set any obd ii codes stored to read in your odometer, then ends with "pdone".

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

there are hundreds of reasons your CEL can illuminate. get the code - we'll figure it from there! To answer your question, O2 sensors usually last 60-150K miles. they usually go bad slowlly and get "lazy" although they can cause problems quickly. I dont have my 4.7 anymore, but I am pretty sure you actually have 4 O2 sensors. 2 before the cats and 2 after. usually its the ones before the cat that cause problems - but not always. I usually replace my O2 sensors around 100K just for fun - although I recently put one in a 3.9 w/65k because it was causing some serious drivability issues. check engine light, backfire, missing, hesitation, sometimes the truck would not go over 30mph... it threw 2 codes on the computer.
