I;ve got a 97 5.2 cc 4x4 automatic, the sticker in the glove box says its got the 44RE trans,i thought it had the 46RE trans... seeing as how the 44RE trans is listed only for the 3.9 motor... doesnt make sense to me but the problem is, while im speeding up from a stop, it doesnt want to shift from 3rd to 4th, it will rev all the way up to 3500 RPMs and then it shifts really hard, but if i let off the gas it shifts smooth like it should .. anyone heard of this problem???

Brian22,
I have a 99 5.2 , I also had the same problem you are having with your trans. My trans was the 44RE, it wouldnt shift into 4th/overdrive. the problem was that I lost the overdrive, I ended up buying a new 46RE with a tow package included, cause I drove the truck with the bad trans for a couple of months and lost the trans completly. I would take your truck to a good trans specialist to take a look at the trans.

I have a 2002 Dakota 4x4 that just had service on the differential and the dealership service man found pieces of metal in it. Now the Moss Bros dealership wants me to fork out $900.00 so they can"investigate" to see IF it is covered under the extended warranty. One of the guys there practically accused me of abusing the vehicle. It only has 73,300 miles on it and has been in 4WD maybe 8 - 10 times. There is no way the differential should be spitting out pieces of metal at this mileage and age. Does anyone know who the Chrysler/Dodge representative is in the Southern California area and how to get in touch with them? I sure would appreciate the help. Thanks.

The Dodge limited slip is known for breaking prematurely. I had a 2001 Ram and a spring in the LSD came loose at about 60,000. Broke the gears so they had to be replaced and the LSD rebuilt. $1900.00!!! I have heard of several other people with the same problem.

Contacted DaimlerChrysler directly via phone number and got them to call the dealership I was having trouble with...Moss Bros. in San Bernardino. The rep told me to take it anywhere to be repaired because at 73,000 miles, it was still under DaimlerChrysler's 7/100 warranty. So, it is scheduled with a different dealership to be in the repairshop tomorrow.

to the original poster...

the 44re is the tranny for the 5.2L, the 46re is for the 5.9. I'm sure there is a couple odd-balls out there w/something different, but that is the norm
