Subject: Check engine light w/ no codes IP: Logged
Message: I have been having some problems with my truck. It overall has a lack of power, gas milage sucks (9mpg in the city), when I drive it for awhile then turn it off; wait 20 minutes or so then start it back up it will start to surge and buck; and almost stall out. I notice it will not stall if I push in the clutch and let it do its thing. But if it bucks and I floor it the rpms will drop more rapidly.
Now I let the truck sit for few days and the blasted check engine light came on. I went down to Autozone and used the scanner but no codes were present. So I reset the pcm and turned the truck back on, and once again the light came on.
Any Ideas?
thanks.

Message: Not sure about the Check engine light.
But for the rough running I would suggest a tune up kit. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I would also check all of you major grounds and power wires. A bad ground can cause all sorts of funny symptoms. If that doesn’t help, you may want to get the PCM tested. You would have to do that at a dealer. I’m pretty sure the parts store scanners are only code readers, not pcm testers.
You may look into new injectors too.

Message: Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention that the plugs were replaced a few months ago. The wires I replaced this time last year along with the cap and rotor.
I hope it is not the pcm...let alone the dealer charges for testing it, then to buy a new one.
I too was thinking to try new injectors. The cost of $400 kinda sucks though. Either that or a new throttle body. My plenum gasket doesn't look bad. I don't eat through oil and am positive it is the original.
Injectors will probably be my next try (after I get the check engine light to stay off)
A new throttle body and intake manifold would be much later down the road due to cost reasons.

Message: if your injectors had failed you would be getting a lean code and you would probally devlope a miss... if you do have a miss remove your spark plug wires one at a time and see if you see any noticable change in the miss..if you cannot hear a difference then you have a failed injector, spark plug or spark plug wire.. throwing parts at a problem is one of the worst things anyone can do, all you will do is get mad at yourself for spending money on something that does not fix your problem... if i were you i would get a fuel pressure reading and check your fuel filter...

Message: I don't see any puddle when I look down the throttle body. There is no "lean code". I have been to autozone twice in the past week. Both times reading the scanner showed no codes. The catalytic converter is less than 7 months old.

Message: Hey bykerdude,
Could you have filled up with bad gas? I had a hateful 2 weeks of similar problems and thought my R/T was done-for! A check engine light with no code means the computer reset that code after a certain number of "cycles" without a like failure. A misfire detected for a millisecond could cause that. Fortunately, after buring all the junk out of my fuel system and cleaning my recently installed plugs, she's good to go!

Message: Unfortunately the gas in the tank was down to about 1/4. I just filled up last night and have driven about a hundered miles or so since. I have turned the truck on and off several times. The code is still present. The power and gas milage has always been an issue, but I feel has gotten worse over the past month.
I am not sure if those issues have anything to do with the check engine light. Wouldn't a miss fire show some kind of code?
So you think that if I have a bunch of crap in my fuel lines somewhere that it should clean out and possibly get rid of the light? Hopefully that is all it is. But I don't feel that is my power loss since I have always felt it was lacking.

Message: OK, I have gone through three tanks of gas now, and 3 bottles of fuel injector cleaner. The check engine light is still present. After each tank of gas I went through I reset the computer in hopes of clearing the light. The new gas cap I got from autozone didn't make my truck run any better or make the light go away. Any other suggestions?
Once again the scannner isn't showing any codes. How likely is it that my PCM is bad?

Message: bykerdude,
Sorry I misread your original post. Is the check engine light constant? I'll look at my factory service manual tonight and get back with you. Did your engine light come on some time after the repairs you listed? Also, the scan tools at Autozone and advance can't scan transmission data from the PCM. The dealer and some good shops have a diagnostic tool that goes deeper.

Message: No the check engine light did not come on after any repairs. I haven't done any repairs for a few months. The truck has a manual transmission so I am unsure if there are any sensors for it. Oh and yes the check engine light is constant.

Message: Have you tried changing your fuel filter? once you pull the filter off, Angle it into a coffee can and have somebody turn the key to the "on" position. It should "Prime" for about 2 seconds & quit. Check the fuel that came out for trash, Junk & water. Dump a can of B-12 in your tank at next fill up, That stuff works 10X better than any other OTC "Fuel Injector Cleaner".
I had a '98 Ram that ran like that below 1/4 tank of gas, The fuel screen/pick up tube had vibrated off the bottom of the fuel pump and when the fuel sloshed back & forth under 1/4 tank it would essentially run out of gas.
An intermittent misfire will set off the MIL. Reset the PCM, Start it up. As soon as the MIL comes on, use the 3 key method to check for engine codes. That should show the code that is causing the problem.

Message: Unfortunately my fuel filter is in the gas tank along with the fuel pump. So that is about $400 and labor. My Check Engine light comes on with the rest of the warning lights upon "key on". All the others turn off as normal, just not the check engine light. I tried the key on, key off, etc. thing the other day. No codes came up during the test. I have reset the computer with more than half a tank and the check engine light still stays on after the key is in the on position.

Message: Bykerdude,
nothing in the OEM service manual about your exact conditions. You mentioned a bad PCM before. What about the supply voltage (battery). One time my truck wouldn't run right or would stall out. Wound up being the battery with no trouble code set. The book mentioned the check engine light only lights when an emmission problem is detected. It looks like you may have to bite the bullet and get the dealer to diagnose your system in real-time. There are just too many things it could be. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. 2000 R/T Club Cab

Message: I had a similar problem with a 99 Plymouth Voyager. The check engine light would come on, and there were no codes via the key switch method, nor using an Autozone scanner. But the light would come back each time it was reset, but no codes.
Finally took it to a dealer, and they hooked it up and found codes. It ended up being a dirty TB and 1 of the sensors (can't remember which sensor though).
I wrote it off to proprietary codes in the PCM. But why the key switch method didn't flash it, I don't know.
