Subject: my 5.2 is sloooooow

Message:
hi guys, this is my first post on here and would like to say hi to everybody. ive been reading the posts and stuff so i know how it goes on this forum.

anyways, i have a 99 5.2 dakota. it has headers, a K&N cold air intake, and a single in single out flowmaster with 2.5 tubing i believe. so the headers "merge" and become 1 tube which goes to the catalyc and the exhaust and out the back. well, my truck USED to be lifted i believe because the speedometer is about 4 mph too slow, and my truck shifts really funny. if i just jam the gas, the tires start spinning which i assume is normal. but if i slowly press the gas untill i git like 2.5K then jam it, first gear (its auto) gets to 5.5K and bounces around from 5.5-6. just bouncing back and forth. so i have to completely get off the throttle and let it shift then get back on it. even from a 10 mph roll, i got beat by a stock expedition which im like "WTF?!?!?!?" so ya, do u think i might already have a chip in my truck somewhere that i just dont know about or what? what should i do to make it faster and shift normally?

thanks in advance
-tyler

that sucks you lost to a 5.4 expedition, those things are sloow

when i bought my truck the exhaust was kinked shut at the end. and it was sloow with the exhaust not being able to exhale.

your truck may just need a good tune up and the trans thing happens to a lot of the dakotas. let off the gas at about 4800rpm to 5000rpm and the truck should shift before hitting the rev-limiter.

Rob C
is right with the TV cable needing adjustment but i have also heard of a governor that gets screwed up inside the tranny.

ya, i wasd wondering if doing a dual exhaust with 2 mufflers the distance of the truck is a good way to spend my money.

im 16 and have a part time job making 8.00 an hour, so im not the kind of person that 500$ is not alot of money to...

but i was gunna go on monday and see what thew local exhaust place has to say about it.

and the letting off before 5k is a good idea. im gunna try that tonight.

i'm 17 and have had my truck for about 8 months and have installed

flowmaster super 40, that just took the place of the old original. there is no piping running out the back so basically there is nothing after the muffler and it sounds mean! noticeable power gain.

throttle body spacer, it improve the gas mileage and gave better engine response.

home brew intake, this is by far the best performance gain for the money only costing me $45 i notice a huge difference at 2800rpm and up to 4500rpm.

did the letting off of the gas before hitting the rev-limiter help?

how many miles are on your truck?

90k. what is a home brew intake? im looking at buying a throttle body and an edelbrock intake manifold. like, very soon. letting off the gas helps a little bit.

ok, update on the problem. my first gear goes to 5.5k and hits the rev limiter and doesnt go anywhere. it just bounces on the limiter. so i let off then second gear starts at like 2.3k and goes to 2.8k then shifts imediately. so i have like no second gear. i believe my first gear has been switches out for a bigger gear. how would i fix this? what would i tell a transmision shop cuz im not for sure?

my truck will do the same with shifts under full throttle at 3500rpm i dont mind because its save me gas. but if i'm going to race i always shift the truck manual. the tranny is just worn and that is common on dodge trannys that have miles i have 152000m and i have fastest 1/4 of 15.80.

the home brew intake is just a fancy word for a home made intake.

and some mods to slow it down!

luvmxrider; yes that is the same 360ci in the dakota and will work fine. to shift manually just put it in first and when the truck revs to 4500rpm shift up into second and...

bad news guys. my truck is all f_cked up. i was driving and like, i had to give it more gas and the rpm's had to keep getting higher before it would go. i was in [d] and it was acting like neutral. reving and not going anywhere. so now its at the shop. probably part of this f_cking transmission sh*t.

with what you described it could also be the clutch in your torque converter and not the transmission as far as the thing not wanting to pull. With what you said about the rpm's bouncing around the clutch could have been engaging and disengaging. (which is telling that's it's about to go out completely)

it did go out completely. 2g's to fix it. i have to pay for 1/2. which is i suppose a good deal, but my truck is only a month old. f_cking peice of sh*t dealer. but ya, im only 16 so 1,000$ is a big wad of cash.

but on the bright side: my truck is going to run normal. and instead of lifting it, im gunna slap some 20's on it and bolt on some more performance stuff and do a system. cuz im gunna have about 5-700$ left after i fix it should pay for the system (i get everything for cost) and a couple performance things.
