Subject: Towing in overdrive? IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 2000 QuadCab 4x4 sport 5.9 w/auto. I bought it used and I've got no manual. Is it cool to tow a trailer with OD on or should I turn it off? My last truck (94 chevy) had to have the OD off to prevent tranny damage. Thanks!

Message: OD off is preffered. If it's on, it can build up excessive heat and damage the trans.
I believe in 2000, Dodges were designed to automatically kick out of OD at a certain temperature extreme but it's safer to not get to that point.
Also, if you really want a manual, you can order one from your dealer.

Message: if towing in hilly areas. I would turn the OD off. but I heard on level ground shouldnt be a prob. also depends on the size of the trailer and how much weight. so when in doubt. turn it off =-)

Message: Thanks guys, that's what I was thinking, just didn't want to waste all that gas if I didn't have to. Jecht that's what I've pretty much been doing, using it if I'm on flat or downhill ground. I occassionly tow a car and trailer,5 or 6 K. I'd love a stick but I need an auto so the wifey can drive it when neccessary.

Message: Teach your wife how to drive a stick! My wife learned when she was a teenager, so I have never had to fight that battle...

Message: She can drive a stick she just forgets to shift...I've let her drive trucks I've had in the past and she'll be doing 50 in second gear, the tach is at 5 grand and she's just sitting there. I'll have to lean over and say "Hun, I think it's time to shift" I'd just be worried the whole time she's gone that's all.
