Subject: 318 Shortblock Rebuild IP: Logged
Message: Hello.
I need to rebuild my short block 318 in my 99. I have a vortech supercharger. I have the mopar performance heads as well as header, m1, tb,etc.
Whats the best low cost way for me to go? I have an offer for a rebuild of a stock 318 block for $1,100.
But I was advised against going with a stock 318 block due to running boost.
Is there just a couple things like pistons that I could upgrade on the rebuild to help keep the cost down but increase the longevity?
Thanks alot for your help

Thats most likely who I am going to have the work done by.
Can you just upgrade the pistons to work better with boost?

Message: I offer the service out here on the west coast---
For reference we shipped a long block, crated ready to drop in-- was only ~$340-350 in shipping for a complete engine (oil pan, valve covers, intake, complete).
318, 360, strokers-- also crate motors, short block, etc.

Message: I had a complete engine with accessories shipped to me from CA to TX using forwardair. Cost was only $250. Good deal if you are close to one of their terminals and have a truck to go pick it up in. Engine hoist did a fine job of lifting it out.

Message: Depends on how much boost you're talking about.

Message: Only talking about 6# of boost. Could a stock block take that?

Message: As long as the crank and bearings are in good shape, you should be fine at that boost level. I know a couple trucks, mostly 360s, that run 6# on the stock bottom end with no problems. Once you start going above that they usually take a good look at beefing the rest of the engine up. Most seem to have more problems with detonation under boost and blowing head gaskets as a result. That is usually due to a poor tune and/or not using a BTM ignition or similar setup.

Message: Should I go with....
Installed
408 stroker - $6500
360 performance block and 4.56 gears/blower cam - $5500
318 Stock block 4.56 gears/blower cam - $3800
My current setup is as follows.
Mopar PCM
Powerdyne 6#
52 F&B TB
M1 Intake
MSD 6A/BTM/Blaster3/8.5mm
Edelbrock Alum Heads
Hughes 1.6 rockers/rods
Shorty Headers
Flowmaster 40 single in dual out
Electric Fan - No Clutch
Stock 318 Block(worn out)
3.92 gears
My truck now KBB is $11k, so its hard for me to justify spending $6500 on a new motor. But if i am going to go with the 360 i might as well go with the 408 minus the gears. But then there is always the cheaper way out and go with the stock 318 block.
Also do the prices for the 360 and 408 seem reasonable installed? Seemed a little high to me.
