What does it take to drop a 5.9 in the regular V6 Dakota? and do you have to change the transmission out with it if you make the conversion?

yes the tranny will have to be changed and the computer and the drive shaft and a posi install unless you already have one.

The tranny will bolt up, but the converter will need a re-balance for use with the 360. Naturally, the factory tranny should be treated to a healthy rebuild, but these trannys are based on the old 904 3-speed. The 904 was used in vans, 2WD Ramchargers, and with 360's in RWD cop cars, so the OD version can handle it. Your trick to longevity is a good cooler and the TransGo kit. If a 5-speed, I'd suggest a heavier tranny. The driveshaft does not have to be changed. It depends on what year Dakota as to how you handle the cooling fan.
