Everyone is forgetting that the best thing to do is get wider tires in the factory size diameters, 15, 16, or 17" rims. My trucks came with 16 x 8 with 255 50 R16 tire. Traction sucks on this truck with the 218" cams and all the other go fast goodies. I want to step up to 275 or 315 in the rear. There is plenty of room back there for the tire but the major problem is the rim. To get that much meat on that rim I will lose traction. Why cause the center of the tire is the only thing contacting the road. The tire gets pushes up in the middle because the rim is to narrow in width. That’s why Mikes99Dakota has the center wear on this tire. You can try to compensate by decreasing tire pressure but the outside wears prematurely and traction still suffers. BTW decreasing tire pressure is ok at the track but it decreases gas mileage and kills handling as you need stiffer sidewalls and higher tire pressure for the road courses. My suggestion is to buy 16 x 9 for the 275's or 16 x 10" or 16 x 10.5" for the 315's. You will notice increased traction right away. Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords has done countless articles on this issue and that is the only way to solve traction problems without causing other issues. And with the cost associated with the larger tire I want them to last as long as possible.

BOB the reason drag cars run 15's is because they can run an extreamly wide tire that are slicks. last time i checked people dont run slicks for every day use. now your also comparing a drag car to a dodge dakota, thats not a good comparison. ex corvetts, vipers, lambo's, ferrari, those cars come with 20's in the rear and sometimes in the front. As for the brakes yes they need to be upgraded but, for anyone who knows some thing about car/trucks bigger brakes cant hurt on any vehicle even with stock wheel size. plus if you go 20's or bigger and dont do a brake upgrade your retarted. so to have a wider tire in the rear sometimes you have to go to a larger wheel size. i currently have 285/40/20 tires and the traction has never been better as well as the handeling.

That Guy. No, the reason drag cars run 15" wheels is for the weight. I can get the same width tire in 20" as in 15", no differance.

Think of this. You have two 30" wheel tire combos, both with 11" tread width. One is 50% alum, and 50% rubber/air. The other is 80% alum, and 20% rubber/air. Which one weighs more?

Greater mass takes greater energy to change motion; both starting and stopping.

There's also the issue of sidewall flex which also helps a drag tire grab the pavement. But that's less important than weight for the average car/truck on the drag strip.

red2000rt; they are Michelin Pilot Sports, not the PS2s or the PS Cups, just the Sports. Silicone smooth tubes on the intakes. K&N drop in filters. Alluminum rad, silicone rad hoses. Cats removed. Otherwise stock. Planned for this winter are 3.73's and some brake upgrades.

Racers add lead bricks to the aft end of the car to increase traction. Dakotas have light rear ends, try putting some weight in the bed. I put a topper on mine and got the missing traction back.

Lead bricks?!? I've never seen anyone do that! The only time you add weight to a race car is to fit into a certain class factored on lbs./bhp. Seems pretty rash to resort to that just to gain a bit of traction.
Maybe a softer compound tire would be a better solution, they will wear faster but it's better than adding lbs. with lead! Or you could just use a bit less throttle (a bit obvious, perhaps)
