Subject: Manual Transmission for 360 IP: Logged
Message: Alright, so what I'm planning on doing is making my own 408 stroker like one on KRC's website but what I really want to know is is there a manual transmission built for the 360 block. I mean, the 408 is built off of the 360 right? I know that dodge never made a manual R/T, which is what the stroker is going into, but I would like to match up a nice manual tranny. To my knowledge there isn't a manual transmission that would work with the 360 block even one that would work for the 408 stroker. Could anybody tell me if there is a manual transmission for this and if so where?

Message: Isn't the 5.9 block the same as the 5.2 block? If it is the NV3500 would bolt up, but I hear the NV3500 5 speed wouldn't hold up. I think the 5.9 in the ram comes with a NV4500 (which didn't fit the dakota)

Message: the blocks are the same but the 5.9 is externally balanced the 5.2 is internally balanced. you couldn't use the flywheel from the 5.2. you could get a donor engine from a fullsize ram and mate the nv3500 to it. not sure how long it would last, especially if you stroking that 360.

Message: The 5.9 and 5.2 was available with a manual in the rams for a while. But they are scarce as hen's teeth. Bolting everything together with factory parts is pretty easy. There are aftermarket kits available with everything you need from dealers like Keisler.
The biggest issue is the pilot bearing. If you have the hole in the back of the crank, it's a simple and cheap procedure to add the bearing. If you don't have the hole, it just got a lot more expensive and a lot more complicated. I don't know that there's any way to be sure except to look.

Message: Okay, so there was a manual transmission for the 360 but only in the ram. Would that transmission not work in the dakota? Most importantly I want to know if there is any manual transmission that would fit in the dakota r/t.

Message: If he is building a 408ci Stroker, the Balance point is completely up to him. Yes the 360ci is externally balanced, but who would build a 408ci externally balanced? I'm Not. Billy of KRC built a nice 408 and put the NV3500 trans behind it and it made an excellent combination. And internally balancing the 408ci gives you the freedom to use a 5.2 flywheel.

Message: The NV3500 is'nt really able to hold the tourqe of a 360. I've seen one around town once that was transplanted in,but I don't know if it lasted.
Personally I would be a little leery of a NV3500 behind a 408.
The NV4500 probably would hold up very well behind a 408. The only problem I could see, is the size of the one in my Ram would make it very hard to fit in a Dakota. And the shift pattern is long and notchy.
A body lift might help, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a street truck.
I'm pretty shure there is a manual kit for the R/T but can't recall where I saw it.

Message: If you're not afraid to spend some serious coin you give Kiesler a try. These two kits look like they can do the job right.

This was Bill Whites truck (KRC) since sold. I don't think it had a lot of track time, but I never heard of him having any problems with it.
