Message:
Is the oil gage on a 2003 Dakota with 4.7 v8 supposed to fluctuate as RPMs change?

Yep...

My 02 will go from the low to high end of the normal range in normal driving.

At idle the pump is spinning so slow that it cannot create an abundance of pressure, but it is more than enough for idle speed. It should jump up to the high end of normal as soon as you pick the engine above idle.

As long as it stays in or real close to those two lines stating the normal range, don't worry about it a bit.

starting in 03 the oil gauge is just a glorified idiot light. seems dc didn`t like all the complaints of it "jumping around". it is a rip-off and is a PITA to remedy.

thanks to both for the responses...if thats the way its supposed to be on the 03s, then i guess ill leave it alone...

can anybody else with an 03 verify their oil gage doesnt fluctuate with the RPMs?

mine doesnt fluctuate on my 03 4.7. it basically stays about half way. I know when I first start the truck up. it will first stop a quarter way up and then slowly make it to half way. I dont know if its the filter. because I can swear that with the M1 filter I had in it. when idle it would be quarter way up and when driving it would be half way. I have a pure one filter in it now. I know differnet filters filter differently. but dont know if it affects oil pressure any. as the M1 was less restrictive than what the pure one is.

just as long as it doesnt bottom out I wouldnt worry about it. even if it does it could be the sensor.

yep mine does the same it stays pretty much in the middle without fluctuating. Ive got a 03 4.7 4x4 cc auto. I had a 98 3.9 and I dont remember it fluctuating with rpms either. I mean.... it will go up or down when you turn the truck on or off> Just to be certain I'll go out and check if things change I'll post again.

I stand corrected then...sorry.

I knew that the HEMI (which came out in 03) had an 'idiot light' gauge. I totally disagree with this move. I don't even like how they removed the numbers on all the gauges like my 02 is. BUT, I sure as hell want to know if my oil pressure is getting lower or higher as a result of something happening. That idiot light won't tell you a thing as long as it is in the normal range...ugh.

Anyway, as long as the needle stays in the normal range, I would worry about it.

Mine will also climb to about quater gauge and pause for about a half second then go to half gauge.
I've watched mine very carefully and have seen it move a needle or two's width depending on temp and rpms.
