Subject: R/T towing a boat?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I recently purchased a 2000 R/T CC. I am going to purchase a 17' or 18' boat soon and I need to know if I can tow it with my R/T or should I keep my old '85 dodge ramcharger 4x4 around for this task? I beleive the type of boat I am getting weighs around 3,000 lbs.

should be fine, the weak points are the brakes, tranny and rear sway bar... I'd air bag the rear axle if you're towing regularly. I've towed over 4500 lbs with a CC R/T, the brakes are barely designed good enough for the truck itself, look into some upgrades, the rear sway bar has plastic end links, prone to breakage under weight, and the tranny should be maintained properly, fluid flushes, and I'd add on a auxiliary tranny cooler, they're around 50 bucks and easy to install.

The R/T's tow rating is only 2000# off the bumper, if you want to tow anything higher then you will need to invest in a Class III, IV, or V hitch.

I thought the R/T had a tranny cooler allready?mine has what looks like one in front of the a/c condensor?
Anyway I think I will keep my Ramcharger, It allready has a 6,000 lbs hitch and electric brakes on it.just another good reason to keep my old truck around.

Good choice - I think the weak point on the R/T for this type of use is the rear springs. Does your new boat trailer have electric brakes ? I heard they were starting to make some like that; most boat trailers have surge brakes.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I added trailer brakes to my boat trailer. Works wonderful, i tow a 22' boat with no problem using my r/t.

A little off topic, but:

with the hotchkis suspension, can you still carry 1000# and tow the 2000#+???

Would helper springs screw up the suspension settings, if this is not possible?

I've got the Hotchkis...but I need to put weight in the back frequently....will helper springs mess up the performance??

More than likely, your helper springs will stiffen up the suspension some. But it really depends on what kind of helper springs.

If they do stiffen up the ride, IMO, that'll more than likely help out your handling.
