Subject: 5.9 cam in 5.2 IP: Logged
Message: im thinking of buying a cam and lifter set, used from this guy with a 99 ram with a 5.9. reason being, is because i have a bad lifter in my 93 5.2. it went bad somehow not long after i put synthetic in it. now i have a rather annoying lifter knock.
basically, i just want to know what gonna happen when i try to put that cam/lifter set from a 99 ram 5.9 into my 93 dakota 5.2.

If you are going to do all the work of removing and installing another cam I think it would be foolish to install a used one. Lifters and cams develop wear patterns and it is not a good idea to switch parts.

Message: Try all the Dakota forums and eBay. You might be able to score a Mopar performance cam for the 5.2/5.9.

Message: They will swap without issue. 360 cam is .410" lift, 318 is .432". You will lose upper rpm power.

Message: Very minimal (I mean certainly not worth the effort of a cam swap), if at all. And it'd fall flat on it's face by 4 grand...just like the pre-Magnum 318's. Problem is, unless you can find a decent used roller cam, you're not gonna see one for less than around $280 (new), but, if the rollers are in good shape (meaning not some rediculously high mileage numbers), you can re-use them with a new (roller) cam. The lobe ramps of a roller cam are level, not angled like with a flat tappet cam, so wear patterns are not the issue. So, subtract the cost of new lifters, and you're down to a net cost of $180ish. Still more than a flat cam, but an improvement. As with any serious cam swap, you'll probably need new valve springs. The stockers are good for around .440" max lift. Most cams, even MP's Magnum RT cam upgrade (not to be confused with the cam in the RT Dakota engines), go over .450" lift, and you have more aggressive profiles that require stiffer springs to keep things under control.
