Subject: Towing Qustion? IP: Logged
Message: I have 2000 Club Cab 4x4 with the 4.7L and 3.52 rear end. I'm towing a 3,000 lb Pontoon Boat.
On long, fairly steep grades I lose 5-7 mph. Is this normal or should the truck maintain the speed?
I'm running out of overdrive.

Message: you should expect to put more pedal into it on the hills and just any time when towing. i tow my 5,500+ lbs 30ft travel trailer with my 93 cc v8 4x4.

Message: My '00 4.7 has no trouble maintaing speed on grade pulling 5000; you either need to give it more pedal as jayb says or you have a problem.

Message: i think your fine just give it a little more gas.
i think you have 3.55 gears and for better towing lower the gears.

Message: You should be fine with the 3.55 ratio unless you really want the lower gears. I was towing 5000 no problem when I still had 3.55.

| Give it more GAS? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, why didn't I think of that. Of course I'm giving it more gas!!!
My question is when on a long steep grade should the truck be able to maintain 65 MPH or is it normal to lose about 5 MPH.

Message: you have the OD on or off? if its off then you shouldnt drop in speed on a long grade if you give it gas. I know when on the highway with my 03 4.7 towing it dont like to shift out of OD and sort of bog down. so this is why I turn it off if I have to go over the moutain towing anything. even not towing it dont like to get out of OD unless I really press the throttle down.

Message: I just pulled my horse trailer 650 miles down to the coast filled it up with furniture and came back over the weekend. About 7000# plus on the return. Set the cruise and let the transmission deal with it. It'll hold any speed up to about 70mph even with that load in and out of the mountains in North Alabama and East Tennessee. That's with a 4.7, 3.92 rear and 5spd auto.

Message: Jim - sounds like you have a problem then, like I said yesterday. Dirty air filter ? Dirty fuel filter ? Dragging trailer brake (see if one wheel feels hot after towing) ? I could maintain speed like that easily towing much more in steep hills of N.H. when I still had 3.55 gears.

Message: Is it safe to keep your overdrive engaged when towing? I've heard you're supposed to turn it off. I bought by Dak used so I've got no owner's manual to check.
