Hello, I just bought a 2002 Dakota club cab 4.7 V8 4x4 5 spd, 55,000 miles.

What type of coolant does it take?

Also, when it is idling and while moving (can't hear it as well while in motion) there is a loud hissing/sucking air noise, like a vacuum leak coming from it seems the rear top of the engine, is this normal for the 4.7 V8's?
I don't think it would be a vacuum leak, as the engine runs incredibly smooth.

Thanks, will be around from time to time. These are awesome trucks!!

Flush it and put some Prestone or some other good sh*t in it.

check the vacuum hose that connects to the top drivers side of the throttle body. mine likes to tear up the line there. makes a loud hissing noise. however they make a decent amount of noise anyway. hard to know whats normal without hearing it though.

Thanks. I checked the vacuum hose on the throttle body, it's good. I looked over the other vacuum connections, they all look good.

On the coolant, I meant does it take the green or the red? My resevour is empty and I can't tell.

Different brands of coolant have different colors and the color doesn't mean a thing. You can even mix colors (brands) if you like. Name brands are probably preferable but I doubt that generic brands are inferior if you do regular maintainence on your cooling system.

ummm, i always thought mixing the green and red is bad. and i thought dodge only uses the green. and i thought the red is always for gm.

Well, I checked the freezing point of my coolant today as well as doing all the other regular maintenance to it.
And it had red coolant in it. So, I'm not quite sure what to think about that, with some saying that Dodge's take the green. And no, you cannot mix the red and the green coolant. I know that, I just didn't know what the 4.7 Dakotas took.

As far as brand goes I always use Prestone, or I think it's Havoline that has the red. I never use generic anything on my cars.

I used Prestone's 'Any make any model' stuff when I installed my block heater last year. Looked good and took out the guess work.

I used to own a Jimmy and reading around GM forums alot of people flushed out the Dexgel (actually DexCool, GM's orange low-tox coolant) because there were some cases where the stuff would turn sludgy and plug coolant passages. Then again, some people swore by the DexCool...

As for the sucking noise, check around the IAC valve and all your intake fittings...never know.

DON'T PUT THE GREEN STUFF IN WITH THE RED!
Learned that first hand when it first came out.
That red suff is a mechanics best friend, you do a lot of water pump replacements.
