Subject: Anyone advance or retard a stock cam? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone ever advanced or retarded there stock cam and made more power with it? I have the money for a new cam, but I dont for new springs, retainers, etc. I have been offered an unopened gear drive for cheap, thats why I'm asking if I can maybe kill two birds with one stone, while I'm installing the gear drive, maybe I can retime the cam while I'm at it.

Message: I didn't respond because I haven't done it on one of these engines. Not too many people do it anymore because you can just as easily get cams ground the way you want. Probably even fewer people do it with stock cams. Here's what you are up against.

Message: Usually adjustable cam gears would go + or -, 4 degrees. I really never saw the benefit. I know a guy that actually advanced his 4 degrees (by accident) and the car never ran right. (350 Chevy) Once he changed it to 0 degrees...ran perfect. To be honest, I'm not even sure if you can do it on a computer controlled vehicle.
Personally I'd pass on the gear drive and save for the rest of the valvetrain parts you want.
