A couple of you have had this problem with 1999 5.2's. Going down the road (or up)(or flat), it shifts 4th to 3rd, back to 4th and so on for no reason. Then overdrive went all together over time. 1, 2, 3 are shifting perfect.
Thinking trans temp sensor , O/D botton possible.
It seems to be a semi common problem out here.

Thanks for any help!

Rick ,
Do you lose the o/d when the trans oil gets up to temp. I had the same problem with mine( 99 5.2 4x4). I lost the O/D first drove it for about a month like that and then I lost 3rd,4th, and reverse, But only when the trans was at operating temp. Needless to say I put a new trans in . If I were you I would take it to get looked at! Good Luck!!

Cowboy1, Noooooo trans (hopefully)
Sounds like you have my truck. But my prob. is
different. Gears 1,2, and 3 are fine at all
Trans temps so far. (If the temp sensor works). I have heard that the trans will not O/D until the temp comes up a little. If the sensor is out,...it always detects cold...see where I'm going? I'm probably wrong, because it makes too much sense.

Rick,
I see what your saying, I was just letting you know that I had the same problem with my trans. My trans started with the same symptoms as yours. I am just letting you know what could happen if you let it go to long like that. I would still have it looked at.

I know it hurts. My truck was down for a month, and $1300 later. Plus I had to barrow friends cars to get to work. I hate driving little cars. But now my truck runs great, trans shifts better then ever with the towing package in. Hope you fix the problem. Good Luck

Rick If you are in need of a tranny I have one out of a 99 dak it was a two wheel drive I'm not sure if the tranny's are the same but I just thought I would let you know. It is a 44RE four speed w/overdrive it has 52k miles on it, if you are wondering why I pulled it out it was because I am turning the truck into a drag machine and had to get a 727 3 speed for it and thought that I would save the 44RE, you never know who might need one (hint) 500 bucks plus shipping and its yours have pics if you would like to see it

Thanks Josh but I don't think it'll go into a 4x4. I might be wrong but I'll check it out and come back here.
