Subject: Cylinder Misfire IP: Logged
Message: 2000 Dakota rough idles while driving and gets worse while on stop light, check engine light came on with code P0172. Took truck to Dodge service (who a year ago fixed cam sensor trouble which was causing stalls).
End of 1st day at Dodge, they performed DRB diagnostic test, "has cylinder misfire fault. swap plugs, wires and injector around. fault did not change." recommended try combustion chamber cleaning.
I ok'd recommendation & truck stayed with them whole weekend. Then they called me & said, "#3 cylinder still misfiring after combustion chamber cleaning." they recommended removal of cylinder heads for inspection, (for cost of about $937). No more warranty on truck so I declined, thinking I could instead use that money for a DP on a new car.
Drove away truck (after paying $290 for work they performed, & $150 5-day car rental) this morning, check engine light was gone, at least momentarily. It came back after driving 3 miles as soon as it rough idled again while driving. The same happened when at a stop, it idles to a point it almost seems to die out. Checked code once parked, came out as P1389.
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Loved this truck 'til now.

Message: Shouldn't be a coil on a plug because he says he has wires and that they changed them around. And if it does have coils then he meant to say they swapped the coils around. That is really odd though that it is isolated on that cylinder when you moved everything around. taking the head off may have been the solution to find out whats wrong but I would wait on that.

Message: I've seen this problem many times. I've also done the swap this and that diag procedures. Swapping parts is a great way to find the problem but beware. I've been burned on more than a few plugs that would not misfire once moved to another cylinder. If you're due for a tune-up, have one done. Much easier and cheaper than yankin' heads.
If a tune-up is not an issue, have a cylinder leak-down test done (correctly) to check for a burnt or bent valve.

Message: Thanks for the inputs! I've also been checking on prior posts with similar issues.
Truck was misfiring on a 10-mile highway drive last nite. Made it home ok. Drove it again this morning on the same route, check engine light was gone, truck had no misfires and check engine light managed to stay out.
I guess I will do more observations on truck for now. Got a longer drive to do tomorrow with uphill drive. will see how it goes.

Message: If it went away on it's own, that pretty much rules out a mechanical problem (ie...burnt/bent valve)
I'd concentrate on ignition and fuel system at this point.

Message: Did they check the injector control signal on
that missing cyl. or the connection to the injector? Should pulse. Check to see if it's like the others at the connector. Seems like that plug is what they didn't swap. Don't short the pins together.
