Subject: 3 bad o2 sensors in three weeks? IP: Logged
Message: My 2000 4.7 Dakota started running poorly and smelling really bad less than three weeks ago. I dropped it off at a local repair shop, and they replaced an O2 sensor. A few days later, the same things started all over again. The shop said the new sensor was defective and replaced it for free. The truck ran fine for about a week, and now it's back to the same thing. They are now telling me they will order a different brand. What would cause three failures in such a short time? Is there something else I should ask them to check?

Message: Really if you think about it, it's really two failures in such a short time. The first one wouldn't count based on the fact it's a 2000 model.
Did they run it on the diagnostic machine?
Some aftermarket sensors have been known to be bad. Let them replace it with one from a different maker and see what happens before you do anything else. They should replace the second one for free as well. Let us know if the other brand does the same thing.

Message: Yeah, the first one failing was no surprise. I forgot to mention that I recently had my truck wired to pull a small travel trailer. That's the only change I've made on the truck in a long time.
I hope to have the new sensor today. I'll report back.

Message: If you are burning antifreeze that can cause an o2 sensor to go bad very quickly. Of course if you are burning antifreeze then you have a much bigger problem than just a bad o2 sensor.

Message: PMantle,
How does the exhaust look? Is it running rich and are you getting any engine codes.
My 2000 4.7 liter started running rich and I was getting misc. engine codes.
Turned out to be the power steering pressure switch blew and leaked fluid down into the drivers side pre-cat o2 sensor harness. Just something to check out, have read other posts with the same problem.
Good luck

Message: Update, and I'll try to respond to each of you. The newest one was installed Friday the 7th. I'm typing this Sunday the 9th, and I just got back from pulling my camper back to storage. Long story short, the engine light came on during the trip, and the smell/smoke is back. The smoke is black, and the fumes are choking. I mean the most horrible smell ever.
Funny someone mentions steering. I've been having to add steering fluid a lot in the last year or so, but have no idea if any switch is involved. I also don't know about anti-freeze. I'll check the fluid level in a bit. I am going to try the same place one more time, then go to my Dodge place next. I'll mention the steering situation/switch. This place is very receptive to suggestions, unlike the local dealer. This is getting frustrating.

Message: PMantle,
Sounds like you got the same problem I had. I suggest you check the power steering pressure switch to see if it blew. Right off the discharge of the power steering pump line is a two wire connector, very easy to get too. Pop off the connector and see if there is fluid inside. If so, this oil runs down the harness and coats the o2 sensor and wiring, resulting in poor performance. I bought the new pressure switch for about 15.00 and installed it myself. Got a new o2 sensor and cleaned up the wiring and connector and put the new o2 sensor in. No more problems after that.
If you say your adding a lot of ps fluid, I'll bet this is your problem.

Message: I have had 3 o2 sensors replaced on bank one and one on bank 2 in the past 5 weeks, as well as all plugs, a fuel injector, and throttle position sensor. The truck is still running rough at idle, and giving off the "burning plastic smell". Sending 171 and evap. codes. The shop did find, what appeared to be motor oil in the wiring harness on one of the o2 sensors it replaced. The cam timing sensor was replaced 8 weeks ago, and PCM was replaced at 50K miles for total failure. Any ideas out there on what the real problem is? I am into it for over $2k already and it still isn't fixed.

Message: Mileage is 93.000+ Mechanic says there is a 10% leakage on #3 cylinder, but it shouldn't be enough to cause any problems, the last guy wanted to do $2500 valve job, with no gaurantee it would fix problem. Lost faith in thier shop when the first test showed no troubles and next week they found 10% leakdown. Gave them 3 tries and over $1k and they returned truck to me running worse than when I brought it in. Turns out they left one of the plug wires off.

Message: Is the 10% leak on #3 cylinder enough to cause one bank to run lean & one bank to run extremely rich? No noise or rough running associated with burnt/worn valve apparent. We are at the "check all applicable wiring pin to pin to the PCM" junction now, then PCM replacement. Time and $$$ intensive. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar problem, or can hazard an educated guess. It was sure easier to diagnose problems in the old days! Getting frustrated here. Anyone have an old "Power Wagon" they want to sell?
