Subject: exhaust for 99 5.2L???
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to put a new exhaust system on my 99 Dakota Sport extended cab, 4x4. I want dual pipes, but i don't know what to go with for the muffler, I looked at flowmaster 40 and 50 series, but some people say they sound bad on these trucks. Some say gibson?? Any advises what to do? Basically I just want a deeper sound, with whatever added bonuses. I have a K/N air filter charger gen II.
Thanks

Hey Ryan,I have a 99 5.2 but I just have straight pipes out the back.Didn't really want mufflers plus the resrtictions on them are alot more than without. The sound is real deep very throaty and the rumble in the cab isn't to bad.Whatever you do be sure and get 3" tips because it makes them sound so much better!!!Hope this helps any!

So Blue Twister are you saying no muffler at all, or with the stock in? What else would you say as far as mods. Headers? How much do they run and are they worth the price?

Well Ryan you are wright no muffle at all just the catalitic converter and then straight pipes. Now the mods department is something I really haven't got into except a Edelbrock open element which pushes more air into the throttle body. This along with the exhaust opened her up alot better and I got about 1 to 1.5 mpg increase which we all know is VERY good for these engines.

Ryan

Go with the Gibson single side exhaust 3".

It is recommended for 4x4s, makes the most power, sounds great and looks different. Everyone has duals out the wahzue. The 3.5" single stainless Gibson side exhaust has a very unique appearance and says "performance" for those that know.

Hey Ryan,

I have a '98 5.2 SLT. Funny you should ask @ exhausts. Last year I was in the market for a new exhaust and here's the result of the research. Gibson's Stainless steel or alunimumized systems are one of the best.

Flowmaster systems are very noisy in the cab and rattle your bones.

If you want the quietest system, the Gibson single side exit is the one. I personally went with Gibson Stainless Steel headers and a Gibson split rear Stainless Steel exhaust system. All the Stainless Steel systems have a lifetime warranty. One side note...Have your system welded together instead of using clamps. You will eliminate the system from leaking.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for their input, I've gotten a couple mixed reviews. What I am looking for is a deep throaty sound, not too much noise, but something to let people know my trucks a little different. Also I don't want to lose power, I'de like to gain as much as possible, don't we all. So with that said what do I go with? The most power, with the deepest, throaty sound? Strait pipes said one...is that legal? Does it produce too much noise, Gibson singel outlet one said, is that too quiet? Thanks

I put a Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow on my '99 V8
4X4 and left it with the factory pipes and it sounds good and gives good performance. I haven't noticed any noticeable increase in fuel economy, but have noticed more felt power.

I own A 95 5.2 I put A y-pipe behind the cat and dueled out the the back with no mufflers and 6" round and 2'long tips I made. It isn't really loud but it has A really DEEP rumble to it.
As far as leagel goes, it is not, but usually if you don't draw attention to yourself, the police will leave you alone.

As I browsed through the old posts, I noticed this on the next to last page and discoverd that some of the newer posts are asking the same questions. So I decided to respond and thus bring the original post to the top of the list yet again. I apoligize to those of you who are tired of exhaust questions, however, I did notice an increasing number of non DAKOTA related posts recently and felt that this might get us back on track here. Anyway. I, like Blue Twister, have had the muffler completely removed and am running a straight pipe with a 3 1/2 in. exhaust tip out of the stock location behind the passenger side rear wheel. I also have removed the entire cold air box system and put on an chrome EDLEBROCK air cleaner, (60's-70's style). It seems (to me) to get more air in and more air out with an increase in power and an increase in milage (as long as I keep my foot out of the injectors) as well as sounding great. It is louder than the trXus M/T tires that I just put on it (at highway speeds). Any input might be helpfull to people new to this site. Once again I apoligize for bringing up old posts but some of the new ones were similar. Thanks for your patience.

Turbo Flow sounds GREAT on my 99 5.2. Good tips make a big differance though! It does get a little loud though after a year or so. But I like that
