Message: while i have heard the some with the hemi not fitting. what where they think when making the dakota. the hemi should have been in the mock up. i think they shouldn't have made the ram with the Viper motor and just had made a B!tchin dakota SRT-8. that would have been cheeper and would have smoked the competion. WHY?

Message: A Hemi Dakota might have cut into more profitable Hemi Ram sales? Would have cost millions more $$ in crash testing a Dakota with another motor? Fuel economy standards? Just thoughts.

Message: The lightest weight 2005-up Dakota 4x2 CC tips the scales at 4275 pounds, over 500 pounds more than a GenIII RC 4.7 5spd. Performance obviously was a lower priority with D-C with the new Dak, compared to truck capability. However, with gasoline in the $3/gallon range, they missed the boat by not offering a RC alternative, in addition to packing on the extra weight. To even approximate the performance of the GenIII R/T, over 300 HP will be needed, and who knows what lousy MPG numbers it would have.

Message: Remember folks, this thing went on sale in 2004. Working backwards I'd bet the design was pretty much frozen in late 2003 -- 2 years ago. Was anyone expecting $3 gas then? I doubt it. Regular cab Dakotas sold pretty poorly in the last few years, and with the extra expense of developing all the new parts (remember, club cabs and quad cabs are the same length now = major parts sharing) I'll bet it didn't make financial sense. As for the Hemi, remember how tough it was for people to get Hemi LX cars for a while? Hemi Rams sold beyond expectations too. Maybe Chrysler went with the 4.7 just so they could HAVE a V8 in the Dakota.
