Message: it has come to my attention that the 5.9 r/t is a heavy truck im not sure on the exact weight. mine is a 2002 rc if some one knows what the weight is please let me know. also what are the heavier parts on the dak that i could change to make it lighter without stripping it down? example fibreglass, steel to aluminum. also is the drive shaft aluminum or steel?

Message: driveshaft is steel. remove spare for 70 pounds. i havent had mine on for almost a year. get a roll pan to replace ur rear bumper for 35 pounds off. keep in mind this is weight off the rear which means more fun but less traction. get a fiberglass front bumper to save about 25 pounds. a fiberglass hood to save maybe 15 pounds. remove the clutch fan so that only the electric one remains for about 8 pounds. get an m1 manifold which is about 5-10 pounds less. edelbrock aluminum heads will save 50 pounds total but will cost about 1500. thas about all u can do without actually messing up the truck and ripping standard conviences such as ac and cruise control out of it. the stuff i mentioned is the max that i would ever do to reduce weight cause u want ur truck to still be civil.

Message: A R/T regular cab weighs about 3880 pounds, a club cab about 150 pounds more. Either one is lighter than a 2005 Dakota CC with 3.7! The 9.25 rear end in the R/T weighs 75 pounds more, and the R/T had a heavy rear sway bar. The 17x9 wheels are beefy, too. What you have to remember is the "bulletproof" nature of the R/T's components. If fuel economy is your goal, work on efficiency, like air intake, exhaust (including cat and y-pipe), synthetic fluids, etc. What is sad about these $3/gal gas prices is seeing fewer R/T's on the road everyday. I drive a '01 4.7 5-spd 3:92 RC, but I still appreciate the R/T for what it was.

Message: joey,

I never thought they were that heavy.

and
zinnmaster,
depending on how you want your truck to look, you can get "racing" seats that weigh considerably less than the stock ones.
And its not really a reduction, but you can relocate your battery to the passenger side of the box for better weigh bias.

Message: what all did you do to get the weight down that low??
... because here in Texas, a regular cab R/T weighs in at 4280 with the driver (200)... and that was a 2003 R/T with no modifications done to it, weighed at Texas Motorplex in Ennis.
.. and a regular cab V6 weighs 3700 lbs without driver

.. and a R/T wheel doesnt weigh 8 lbs... each one weighs 32 lbs with center cap, no tire. That's the standard R/T wheel and not the chrome one.

Message: Zin,
i am located in the DFW area.
as for options lessening the weight... uhhh, power windows and locks do not weigh 1000 lbs. And power windows, locks, etc etc etc all come standard on a R/T. So when i look at the basic options of a R/T.. wait, there are non... i think the only option is leather.
Zin,
if you really want to get serious, you are going to have to loose a lot of the amenities that come with your truck. I have taken off around 700-800 lbs off my truck and i'm going for more. I have removed such items as both air bags, control module, wiring, dash (building custom aluminum now), a/c compression, condensor, evaporator, heater box, all associated lines, wiring etc etc. I have also removed a lot of chassis and suspension stuff that is not needed, or replaced with lighter items.
I'm shooting for a 3200 lbs dakota powered with a 400 big block.

and i have faith that anybody on this site that has a working ticker will know that a stock R/T does not weigh 3166 lbs.
next time your buddy weighs your truck at his scale, ask him to pull forward and put all four tires on the scale.
here's a couple of examples for you
2003 regular cab R/T - 4280 lbs
1999 regular cab 5.2 - 4030 lbs
2003 extended cab 4.7 - 4115 lbs
1998 regular cab 3.9 - 3877 lbs
1989 r/c longbed 3.9 - 3125 lbs

Message: Its funny watching a dumbass guy who thinks he know's everything get shut down buy a intellegent dakota owner who oviously knows what hes talking about. intensedak39 has been on this site a long time so I think you should listen to him since he has a lot of experience and just doesnt make stuff up. I know my 1996 dakota with a 318 weighs 3350 lbs with a roll pan, no spare, 1/8 tank of gas and without my 200 pound fat azz. It is the lightest genII truck also, no A/C, no power anything, RC, Short bed. I think a GenIII dak weighs 300 pounds more in the same form, Correct me if im wrong intense. And the R/T has a heavier tranny and a heavier rear end along with a sway bar. I have removed about 200 pounds in wieght from my already light GenII and is still no even close to what you say your R/T wieghs.
1996, 318, RC short bed, auto, 3.55 gears, Gibson headers, JBA Y-pipe, Carsound cat, Custom dual exhaust, K&N intake, IAT adjuster, 3923 plugs, 180 stat.
Best time 14.9 @ 91MPH on the dyno
On the way...4.10 gears with sure grip.

Message: I did some research to see what the heck a RAMZILLA tranny was. (he did mention he had one).
It is some conversion to make a 46RE into a 48RE for high power applications. Seems that it would be HEAVIER with the descriptions I read. Being HEAVIER and THICKER metal involved. I didn't read anyting about LIGHTWEIGHT materials.
I never heard of a RamZilla before and don't KNOW for sure what it weighs. So I COULD be wrong. But just a hunch.
As far as POWER WINDOWS adding weight???
Ha ha. I think EACH power window assembly in either my Dakota or Grand Caravan probably weighs no more than 5 Lbs each MAX!
I know. I've taken them apart. They are SO LIGHT WEIGHT that I'm considering getting some extra ones to install into my '74 Duster so I could upgrade to power windows yet not add any extra weight!
I too think something was wrong with his scale.
BTW. I went on a scale last weekend. Had a 100 or so Lbs of a chair and some crap in the bed. Weighed in at 5200 Lbs!
Talk about HEAVY!
