Subject: 4.7 oil pressure IP: Logged
Message: I just purchased this '01 QC and have what is fitting the description of lash adjusters bleeding down.Slight clatter for a few seconds after startup( alot worse when drain back valve in filter was not working.)I was wondering what you guys have seen for normal oil pressure? Mine runs from the highest to the lowest within the normal range on the factory gauge. According to scanner data 15-20 psi hot idling in drive, up to 75-80 psi fast idle cold or over 2500rpm hot when running down the road.Seems like a wide span but this is the first one of these motors I have owned.

Message: Nothing worng with that pressure.
It's normal for pressure to climb with RPM's.

Message: I've got a 2000 4.7 with about 74,000 miles and mine usually is reading about 45 psi, it doesn't vary much. Sometimes the pressure is a little higher after I start it up on cold days. It's usually reaches operating pressure (45 psi) in the time it takes me to put my seat belt on, except if it's been sitting for a long time. I've been using Mobil One 5w30 since I bought it with 27,000 miles on it. I don't get the ticking unless I leave it sitting for about a week. I try not to put it in gear unless the oil pressure gauge is reading on or about 45 psi.
It sounds like your oil pressure is jumping around quite a bit, is there a pressure that it seems to be at most of the time?

Message: my 00 4.7 (62xxx miles) has a noisy lash adjuster as well. I only hear it after the truck has sat all night and I start it. My oil pressure jumps almost instantly up to the high end of the normal range on startup. If I sit and idle for a good while, (with the truck warmed up fully) it drops to a hair above the midle marker. I assume tha's 45-50 PSI right there.. I use mobil 1 5w30 and Napa Gold filters if that matters...

Message: Chris, 75/80 psi is too high. There is a little known issue called bearing wash. There are those that say it is not a problem but after 25 years as a mechanic I can say I have seen this happen, usually with cam bushings. It is not normally a problem but another side effect of too high of oil psi is the fact that it takes HP away from the engine. Not a great deal but it still robs HP. These engines are more than fine with 45 psi at speed and 25 psi at an idle.

Message: My thought was that the 75-80 was too high but not having a point of reference from others couldn't tell. Gotta get a spec from the factory and a mechanical gauge to verify where I stand. I was trying to get a feel from others where these that are OK are running. Thanks

Message: Chris, my 01 CC does the exact same thing...bit of lash adjuster clatter on startup, and the top to bottom oil pressure range.

Message: How many miles does yours have? Has oil been changed frequently? Any sludge build up? I just bought mine with 115K and don't have any clue what previous owner did for service.

Message: I just turned 50K last week. I change my filter every month and the oil once a year with Amsoil 5-30. No sludge problem yet...
