Subject: Death Flash?? IP: Logged
Message: I know this subject has already been discussed but here goes with my specific info....
The sticker on my Rad. Core support bar reads as follows for a PCM reflash and I was wondering if anyone knows if this specific flash is the "death flash"?
PCM#: 56040359AH
TSB: 18-001-01
Dealer Code: 44491
Thanks in advance

Message: IIRC, The death flash is Dodge's cure for the pinging caused by the belly pan gasket leaking.
With the death flash installed, it told the computer to pull alot of timing which in turn took away a lot of power.
Don't quote me on this though. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Message: Just beautiful..... DD, the "death Flash" is, as ewraven stated, a computer "upgrade" that Dodge does to your pcm if your engine is ticking.. Not always cause by the plenum gasket, or belly pan. If you have a dak 4.7, you can look on the radiator core support to see, there should be a sticker that says PCM Update and have a couple sets of numbers on them. Now I gotta figure out how the hell to get rid of this danged flash crap!

Message: I didn't know it involved the 4.7L too.
The dealer offered to death flash mine right after I bought it used. It's a 1999 5.2 liter that I bought in October last year with 72k miles on it, it came with a 90 day warranty and was pinging something fierce when I got it.
I took it to the dealer and so they looked it over. The mechanic said that the plenum gasket was not leaking, so he offered to perform the
"TSB to reprogram the ECU". Luckily, I already knew that this was the death flash and got my truck out of there ASAP. I ended up just doing a simple ignition tune up with Mopar 8mm wires and some of those copper Champion Truck plugs; that got rid of the pinging all together. But at the same time though, I also did the TSB for rerouting the plug wires so that they don't arc between each other and/or the block. I think that is where most of my pinging was coming from.

Message: Yeah, the death flash was to cure the ticking.
I wouldn't worry about it though. Just if it starts the ticking, check the plenum gasket and if that is still good, then do an ignition tune up and that should fix it.
IMO, if your truck wasn't ticking when it was new, then it will never ever need the death flash, because anything that makes it tick now, would be caused by just normal wear and tear.
Going to the M1 intake manifold is definately a good thing since you'll be getting rid of the plenum cover and gasket all together. That's really the only problem area I've seen on the Magnum 5.2 and 5.9 liter engines.

Message: I have one sticker on the actual pcm (silver box on the passenger side apron/innder fender), and another sticker on the uppper rad support. Should be a white sticker that say's something along the lines of PCM Update.
toolfan: The thing with the superchips is that 1)you can pick one up on ebay a lot cheaper, and 2) they do more than just remove the flash, talk to GraphiteDak about his, you'll be convinced like I am to buy one (when I get the cash, even off of ebay they run about $289.)

i have heard that once you use the superchips it will not work for someone else. i dont see how it wouldn't work for someone else if people are selling them. im still thinking of getting one but right now my uncle and i are building up a 440. that is only going to cost me $700 or so for a good cam and new pistons.

Message: Once superchips is installed it locks the programmer so it cannot program any other vehicles. However, it saves your original settings and once you set them back to stock, it free's up the programmer to work again.
Superchips does this you can't program all your friends trucks for free. The unit only works on one vehicle at a time, but can be reused once you return the original vehicle back to stock.
